If you’ve been in San Diego for awhile, you’ve probably heard of Mt. Helix….even if you consider it too far east to be civilized. It is easily recognizable by the large cross that stands at the summit of what is now a privately owned and managed park and amphitheater. It has a colorful history involving an initial foreclosure purchase back in 1903, citrus and avocado groves, and the beginning of a small artist colony following the first road through the area in 1913.
But what you might not know is that Mt. Helix is one of the best places to live in San Diego County, and here is why
- Lots are generally larger than average, many an acre or more
- Almost all homes are custom builds from the ‘50s – 60’s, not cookie cutter, with some real character.
- Because of its elevated positions, many homes have views that are some of the best in the County
- The weather is great! It may be foggy at the beach, but you’ll be enjoying clear skies.
- Many of the roads are private, with a wonderful secluded feel.
- The location is fabulous with easy access to Interstate 8, Hwy 125 and Hwy 94. You can be in downtown San Diego in about 10 minutes.
- You’re minutes from the quaint La Mesa Village area which boasts some great restaurants and plenty of antique stores.
- Every store you can imagine is within a 5 mile radius.
- Mt Helix is home to some of the most expensive homes in the County topping $2 million, and yet there are homes under $600,000 as well.
- As part of La Mesa, there is still a small town feel and an opportunity to be involved with your community.
I grew up close to Mt. Helix, later owned a home there, and currently live nearby. And to be honest, out of all of San Diego County, that is probably where we’ll move back. I miss all the mature trees, shrubs, the Spanish style homes and the 60’s ranchers. If you’re looking for an area that has charm and character, please give Mt. Helix a look. I’d love to be your guide!
