If one takes the I-5 route from Sacramento to Monterey, through Stockton, which takes advantage of Pacheco Pass (highway 152), they will experience landscape much different than scenes along the usual route, traveling west on highway 80 out of Sacramento. The drive seems more relaxed, and is absent the bridge tolls.
In recent days the hills along Pacheco Pass are a velvety blanket of moss green. Mists sometimes hover in the area, providing a mystical realm. The Irish green hue is a gift of recent March rains.
Land development along Pacheco Pass is sparse, but there’s one establishment which has been around longer than I can remember. The roadside stop, Casa de Fruta, is celebrating over 100 years of existence.
In earlier years, Casa de Fruta was little more than a good sized fruit and nut stand. But, in today’s world, the amenities have grown in size. There is a café, gift shop and wine tasting, in addition to the artfully displayed fruits, vegetables, nuts and candies. It makes for a pleasant highway stop!
Casa de Fruta is located at 10021 Pacheco Pass Highway, Hollister, CA 95023.
