I love savannah!! There is always something to do in this town from Jan to June. (then it gets hot, but still things to do) and it picks up again from Sept to December-with the Film Festival, Jazz Festival, and Blues Festival-and so many things are free!
You wouldn't believe how many free events there are that you can take advantage of -1st Saturday on River Street, fire works every 1st Friday, Folk music the list goes on.
There is also, the free gallery hop -which goes all yr. long which I will report about later. -And SCAD -always has a free concert in Forsyth Park for it's graduating class in May which constantly features big name performers-and is open to the public. 2yrs. ago the headline act was James Brown-and the park was packed .
Savannah is a living -destination. This wkend 4/25-4/27 is parents weekend for the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) Students-and the 27th annual Sidewalk Art Festival in Forsyth Park. -Sat. 4/26 ---which is free and open to the public. This is the time when SCAD-Students, professors and alumni-create original works of art on the sidewalks of Forsyth Park. Every participant is given a bucket of sidewalk chalk and a designated space to create their special design. There is also a space for families and kids --- to just do there own thing-how special is that!!
There are usually over 200+ entries and it is a walking tour of some of the most interesting art you will ever see. There is a judging in three categories: students, alumni, and prospective students with monetary prizes for the best work in each category. Grey's Reef, one of the sponsors will also give an award for best Underwater Scene. --The art is beautiful-and the biggest wish is no rain-although the city has the work washed away by Sunday evening -which is sad.
Think France and sidewalk art -I've been there and the chalk on the park in Savannah is amazing-you will not be disappointed. Besides the art, there are food vendors, SCAD info booths on their programs, entertainment, plus a myriad of displays on Savannah and all of our great events.
