Think about your safety by making sure you have visible house numbers on your house and on your mailbox. Emergency vehicles need this assistance to make sure they are responding to the correct address. This is a good post by Nina Rogoff.

A Simple Step to Home Safety - Check Yours Now!

Whether you're reading this at night or in the daytime, there is a simple home safety step that you can do right now! Go outside and look at your home from the street. That's it. That's the simple step.

So, what are you looking for? Here's a hint: what's missing from the home below that is a safety hazard?

Home Safety Tips from Nina Rogoff, RE/MAX Executive Realty 781-883-3764

The problem has been address..ed (no, pun intended) in the photo below.

A Simple Step to Home Safety from your Premier Agent, Nina Rogoff, RE/MAX Executive Realty, 781-883-3764

The house numbers have been added above the garage door and on the front door. Having the house numbers on your house make it easier for more than just your package delivery services.

Remember, seconds count in an emergency! Help the emergency responders find your house as quickly as possible.

A simple step to home safetyPlace house numbers in well lit areas on your house and/or garage so they can be seen clearly from the street at night and during the daytime. Choose numbers that are at least 4" high and have a contrasting background so they can be seen at night. Check that bushes and trees aren't blocking the numbers.

Captain Madden, of the Town of Sharon Fire Department, pointed out to me not that long ago that if you're placing house numbers near the garage door DON'T place them on the door itself. Otherwise, when your garage door is open, your house numbers are hidden.

Remember to number BOTH sides of a curbside mailbox. If your mailbox is not at the curb, put a post at the end of your driveway with the street numbers. I was delivering packages the other day and could not believe that in this particular development, the numbers had only been placed on mailboxes from one direction...not the side I was approaching from!

Want to know more about preparing your home for sale? Call Nina Rogoff, RE/MAX Executive Realty, 781-883-3764Take a moment to walk out to the street and look back at your house.

If you cannot easily see the house numbers, make a quick trip to your local hardware store. You will be doing something simple for your safety.

I see houses without visible numbers pretty frequently. Have had a few clients who didn't want to display a house number because of "privacy".

Seems to me that privacy isn't much good to you if your house burns down because the fire department can't find you..

Great re-blog, Debbie.  House numbers also help the mail get to the house as well.  (And, I'm speaking from experience.   )

After 47 years in Public Safety responding to calls for EMERGENCY SERVICE, my husband is still amazed at how many people don't take something so simple to heart Debbie Reynolds .   It is most likely their own friends and family that will benefit or whose life will be saved.

Nina Rogoff makes excellent points here.   My husband adds, consider buying a reflective material back plate to put the numbers on so they show up easily when a headlight or flashlight beam crosses them.

AND, . . . . . for you people who live on a navigable lake like we do with boat traffic; make sure you also put your house number on your dock so you can be found from the water or a boater can identify their location in case of an emergency.

Interesting, Debbie, that this is the law in Massachusetts. It's always frustrating when showing homes when we can't see a house number clearly, especially as it starts getting dark. My house has a number next to the front door, on the mailbox in front of the house, and also at my driveway behind my home. So far so good, I've never had anyone who needed to come here tell me they couldn't find my house.

It is required to have the numbers in the city but some country routes are challenging, Nina.
