A Simple Step to Home Safety - Check Yours Now!
Think about your safety by making sure you have visible house numbers on your house and on your mailbox. Emergency vehicles need this assistance to make sure they are responding to the correct address. This is a good post by Nina Rogoff.
A Simple Step to Home Safety - Check Yours Now!
Whether you're reading this at night or in the daytime, there is a simple home safety step that you can do right now! Go outside and look at your home from the street. That's it. That's the simple step.
So, what are you looking for? Here's a hint: what's missing from the home below that is a safety hazard?
The problem has been address..ed (no, pun intended) in the photo below.
The house numbers have been added above the garage door and on the front door. Having the house numbers on your house make it easier for more than just your package delivery services.
Remember, seconds count in an emergency! Help the emergency responders find your house as quickly as possible.
Place house numbers in well lit areas on your house and/or garage so they can be seen clearly from the street at night and during the daytime. Choose numbers that are at least 4" high and have a contrasting background so they can be seen at night. Check that bushes and trees aren't blocking the numbers.
Captain Madden, of the Town of Sharon Fire Department, pointed out to me not that long ago that if you're placing house numbers near the garage door DON'T place them on the door itself. Otherwise, when your garage door is open, your house numbers are hidden.
Remember to number BOTH sides of a curbside mailbox. If your mailbox is not at the curb, put a post at the end of your driveway with the street numbers. I was delivering packages the other day and could not believe that in this particular development, the numbers had only been placed on mailboxes from one direction...not the side I was approaching from!
Take a moment to walk out to the street and look back at your house.
If you cannot easily see the house numbers, make a quick trip to your local hardware store. You will be doing something simple for your safety.
