MLS Info / High - Middle - Elementary "Call School Board"

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Distinctive / LIC in VA

More than once the topic of agents filling in the school information has come up in a CE class. Many agents immediately reply with statements like " I hate that- many of my buyers only want to buy in a specific school district", or " that's because the listing agents are too lazy to look it up", or " the listing agents should be fired", etc, etc. Most comments are negative towards the listing agents that enter " Call School Board".

Well, when I am the listing agent, I can easily look up the current school information, but if I know that a school boundary change is being planned, I will use " Call School Board" instead of entering the name of the High , Middle, and Elementary schools. And sometimes I'll even write in the Remarks to " Verify Schools".

If a buyer wants their kids to attend a specific school, and they base their home purchase on being in that school district, they should not rely on the school information posted in the MLS even if that school information is currently accurate. The following year, that school information could be different. So suggesting that buyers and buyers agents " Call School Board" is the best thing to enter into the MLS.

So if you research and discover my listing isn't in your desired school district:

"You just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
Just get yourself free
Hop on a (different bus), Gus
We don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free"

What Jeff?  You don't do the selling agent's work and look up individual schools for all the buyers' children?

I love the phone call from an agent asking me why my report didn't include the specific list of things the buyer should ask the seller to do...

Hi Jeff.  All we can do is post the current facts, though we can mention potential changes in the remarks.  I do feel it's important to put the schools into the MLS info because when some search by schools, the home will show up in the results.

Jeff it is required to insert the schools in our MLS system.  What I always tell students when I am teaching CE is don't rely on  the information as far too many times it's wrong.

#1- Hi Jay, I know what you mean. School districts around here are constanly changing. They even split current schools up.

#2- Hi Gabe, We have lots of changes going on, even during the school year. one year juniors and seneiors at loudoun vallet could choose to stay there or go to the new Woodgrove HS on the other side of Purcellville.

#3 - Hi Anna, Exactly. Many agents just copy what wa sin the previous listing and don't bother looking it up. We can still use ' Call School Board" or even leave it blank. Thanks.
