Getting stopped on the street and being asked about real estate

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner CA#01772851 HI#RB21268

It is always nice when someone stops YOU on the street to ask for real estate advice. It really doesn't matter whether something tangible comes out of it right there and then, but it is something that we can follow up on.

Often these brief conversations are about something that this person is contemplating and needs a little clarity. Usually, I just let them talk so that I get enough information.

AND THEN I FOLLOW UP IN WRITING

That stop on the street was, after all, accidential. Would they have talked to another agent if he/she had come across their path? Who knows, but they stopped YOU.

It's too easy to discount these accidential meetings, after all, they talked about something they plan to do in the future.

BUT THE FUTURE STARTS NOW

The real estate business is a very personalized one. It is a business where we guide and advise our clients through the purchases and sales of, often, the biggest investment that they have. So even if they plan on a move this summer, let's say, the groundwork needs to be done now.

I had a good experience yesterday while in a local store where a man saw my Realtor logo on my jacket. The store was busy and I noticed a lot of folks listening in as he asked me about Real Estate and our market. I got his name but I wish I could have gotten all the others who listened in Hella M. I know what you mean. I get asked by this one check-out gal at Safeway all the time. Maybe next time I will make a production out of it with those in line behind me.

Hella,  A year from now means, in many cases, they might well be getting started today!

Absolutely. All it takes is a bit of chatting with someone, bring up real estate and, bingo, they will talk about their future plans. And I can give advice now.

Hella,
Every “big deal” starts with a conversation. We just never know where a conversation will lead. That is what keeps our business interesting.

And there's nothing like people coming up to YOU on the street and starting the conversation about real estate. Especially here in Carmel-by-the-Sea.

I agree 100%, that's why we can not be secret agents and wear our brand pins with pride. I'm stopped at restaurants, on the street, etc. and the magic question arises  How is the market?

Apr 03, 2016 01:23 AM
Hella M. Rothwell, Broker/Realtor®

And the market is certainly great here in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Pricey, but then, it is on one of the most gorgeous beaches in a fabulous area.

Put 40 years of experience to work for you

About 10 years ago, long ago when I used to smoke, I got out of my car in Midtown to light a cigarette. I mean, who smokes in her Mercedes, right? A seller came out of her house, walked down the sidewalk and said, Hey you look an agent, and I need my home listed. True story. I listed it and sold it.

It is good to be recognized first and then that they felt good enough about you to ask your advise is also good.  You can't go wrong by following up.

You are so right. I love it when people start that conversation about real estate. "Makes my Day" as Clint Eastwood might say here in Carmel-by-the-Sea.

Living in a small town, when I was an agent (and making a point of being the agent whose name and photo were constantly in the weekly newspaper) people stopped me in the grocery store ALL the time. "How's the market" was the #1 question.

Many of them were past or present clients or people I knew, but not all of of them...

I used to laugh when somone would say "Hey! You're Marte!" I knew that.

Yes, the follow-up is so important. Which I immediately did with this person and she was very appreciative.

You never know when it's going to happen. I was in a grocery store. Young lady I've known for a while walked up to me. I had my name tag on. She took my photo and with phone number showing then said, "Will call you later".  Bought a house and sold  within 30 days. Funny thing was she had said that a few times before and I was totally surprised when she was ready. As an agent, I am always ready.

Apr 05, 2016 11:11 PM
Hella M. Rothwell, Broker/Realtor®

Great story. The big thing is not to push too hard because they might not be quite there yet. On the other hand, the follow-ups are important until they are ready.

Hella, this is a great personal story that has implications for all of us.

The day of sitting in the office and having people come in is on the down slope.

I hear many stories of agents who are out in coffee shops and markets and are engaged in conversations that lead to business.

Thanks

So true. Although I have a great little office in Carmel-by-the-Sea, I don't expect people to just pop in. Usually, I meet prospective clients from referrals or just walking around meeting people. And those off the Internet, of course, and from my marketing.

Great post. It's always nice being recognized it the community as a resource. Not only does it give us a great opportunity to make an impression in person, but the follow up in writing really makes an impact. The rewards of spending an extra few minutes to write a thoughtful card cannot be measured, but I have experienced the benefits enough to dedicate a few minutes each day to just writing thank you cards.
