Overcoming Self Doubt!

One of the silent killers of many a career in Real Estate, especially for new or struggling Realtors is self-doubt. I can write an entire thesis on the psychological mind and how it stops your forward momentum-but I won’t. The bottom line is this: confidence is key. If you don’t believe in yourself then your only chance is to believe someone else who believes in you-whether a manager, spouse, mentor, whatever. NO SUCCESS HAPPENS IN REAL LIFE IF IT DOES NOT HAPPEN IN THE MIND FIRST! Disney saw Disney World in his mind before it happened in real life.

 

You may look around you and see a small pipeline and say, “I can’t do this or I am just not that good”. You may look at the marketplace and say, “the problem is our market-it is just slow right now”. But I tell you in almost all cases, YOU are stopping you-no one else. I saw myself with 40 loans in my pipeline before it happened. BUT IT HAD TO HAPPEN IN MY MIND FIRST! You name the great achievement and it happened in the mind first. The airplane? Yep. Kentucky Fried Chicken? Yep. You becoming a millionaire? Yep-has to happen in the mind first. If you wait around for proof of your future success before you will believe it then it will never happen. You must believe it in your mind first. Here are some ways to build up your confidence:

 

First, clearly visualize your outcome. If you are struggling, chances are exceptional you don’t have a clear vision for your business. Take some time away-take a day or half-day and get away from the office and sit down with a paper and sketch out where you see yourself in 5 years, then 1 year and then next month. Be crystal clear. Hey, situations go against me and I get bummed out just like you, I find the key to correcting it and getting the fire again is a ½ day away from the office where I re-cast the vision for myself. I can’t think for a few hours on my vision, on what I am shooting for, without getting pumped up again. The thing getting you down, even a crisis closing, is no big deal in the scheme of your life-getting away for ½ a day makes you realize that. Get a clear vision or if you are down, re-cast your vision. Broker/Owners-your number one task is to cast the vision for the people.

 

Second, if you really lack confidence then do a mantra. While getting ready in the morning say to yourself 50 times, “I am the best Realtor in X”. Just say it 50 times out loud and do the same at night. Sounds corny, but it has been proven that the subconscious mind can not discriminate between fact and fiction and is most open to suggestion at night and in the morning. Do that every day for 30 days and you will be blown away at the results. I’ve done it-it works. Your spouse will think your nuts but that’s OK-they won’t mind the increased paycheck!
