On the side of Burnt Mountain in the town of Jasper, Georgia sits a new vineyard and recently opened winery. Named 'The Fainting Goat Vineyards and Winery," this new family owned business makes for a surprisingly fun and delicious adventure.
The Winery and Tasting Room
The building itself sits high up on the mountain with a view that rivals views in Europe. The gorgeous mountain view is visible from the terrace outside of the tasting room, from inside the main tasting room, and also from a second floor balcony above the tasting room. The inside of the building is beautiful with lots of wood and a huge stone fireplace that adds a warm ambiance for visitors to the tasting room on a cold winter's day. The inside main tasting room has three long tables, the upstairs balcony has three smaller tables, and the outside veranda has five tables.
The Wines
The staff at the Fainting Goat Vineyards and Winery is incredibly friendly and helpful. As soon as a customer walks through the door they are greeted and given a description of the wines and food offerings in the bistro. The main tasting room has a bar at one end and customers head to that bar to order their wine. Wine is available in three choices: wine tastings, a glass of wine, or a bottle of wine.
The wine itself is worth venturing out for. There are five choices of white wines with noble names like Old Glory and Liberty. There are five choices of red wines with names including Patriot and Valor. The wine tastings are available as four choices for $8.00 or eight choices for $12.00. Each tasting equals one ounce. The glasses of wine run $7.00 to $8.00 per glass. The bottles of wine run from $19.00 per bottle to $26.00 per bottle. My personal favorites were Liberty in the white, and a red wine named Carlos Semi Sweet. The wines seemed to taste that much better because of the view, and the musical entertainment of a guitarist who plays on Saturday afternoons. Oh yes, and then there is the food...
Food at the Bistro
A recently added bistro, named Grazing at the Goat has opened inside the winery. The bistro has offerings in categories of Savory Pairings, Hearty Fixins and Sweet Pairings. Under the category of Savory Pairings one will find a cheese flight consisting of cheese, fresh fruit, olives and sun dried tomatoes. A house favorite under this part of the menu is the red pepper jelly topped pimento cheese spread (picture above) and I can personally vouch for it's tangy and delicious taste.
The Hearty Fixins category features items like tomato bisque soup, a grilled vegetable panini and a Farm Hand Muffaletta sandwich.
And for dessert, visitors can choose from items like bananas foster jelly jar pudding or a white chocolate raspberry torte.
Special Celebrations
The Fainting Goat Vineyards and Winery is available for weddings and the views it offers would make for an amazingly memorable event venue. They also have special events planned throughout the year which include a delicious brunch menu for April 17th, and a Kentucky Derby Day on May 7th.
Spa Products
The winery also offers spa products like bath salts, lip balm, soaps, bath powders and hand and body lotion.
Close to Big Canoe
A visit to The Fainting Goat Vineyards and Winery makes for a wonderful afternoon of delicious delights. And the best part is that it is only 30 minutes from my community of Big Canoe, Georgia.
But Where are the Goats???
And in case you are wondering, no, there are no fainting goats there. There are actual fainting goats though. The name of the vineyard and winery comes from a type of goat called a Myotopic goat whose muscles freeze when the goat gets scared. They fall over for about 10 seconds and it looks like they have fainted. The owners want the experience of their customers to be whimsical, like the fainting goats, therefore they chose that name for their winery.
Here's a Youtube clip of fainting goats for your viewing pleasure...but don't worry, they are not in pain when they "faint"! I hope you enjoy the video and have a great weekend.
