The Los Angeles Festival of Books after action report: Day One...
Well off we went 08:30 am traffic was light unfortunately raining at a steady pace. We arrived ahead of schedule and the parking structure normally taken when we usually arrive was still open PB aka Public Parking Building B needless to say, the early arrival, not parking in the usual place I got turned totally around.... my navigation was totally off... in 30 minutes we covered the entire campus and managed to get to Mudd Hall which was virtually less then five minutes to where I parked... Oh what a start.
In spite of that Diane managed to get to the Panel where the three authors were, she was looking for one of them...turned out she liked all three. I was catching my breath under an umbrella and going through all my emails which I would normally do when I am working.
The weather was cooperating on and off. Thanks to weather gear and umbrellas we managed. Met three great authors and managed to increase our library with five more books. Needless to say the book sellers were not prepared or should I say had a hard time guessing what the turn out would be. Some of them had not brought with them books that authors have written and were present at the Festival of Books. Other book sellers did not bring enough and sold out the books of authors who were present.
In our case we had to go to four parts of the campus until we found this one book that one of the authors was talking about and signing. Needless to say a project that turned out well at the end. We saw her twice and she appreciated the heroic effort that it took to find her book and see her twice.
Needless to say the post would not be as much fun if you did not see the pictures. This is truly a first. In 21 years of the history of the Los Angeles Festival of Books there was rain. Sadly it affected turnout and clearly fewer Food Trucks made a profit and fewer book sellers managed to sell books. My observation was that many did not even show up to sell their rare books that would have been damaged by the rain.
Anyway check out the pictures and tell me what you think. At the same time keep in mind Diane and I are going back tomorrow another Storm is expected:)))
