I don't even need a permit for all my pets

By
Real Estate Agent with Falcon Property Solutions

We are down to one child at home (from six). Our youngest is developmentally delayed and will always be with us, so we keep downsizing. (HOORAY!) This summer we were blessed with a beautiful 1951 Mid-Century Modern rancher. We finished the basement and made a suite for our daughter, and we're on almost an acre at the trailhead to a forest preserve. My back patio tends to be a gathering place for the 'neighbors,' (my daughter calls them 'dinner' LOL) and when I sit out there, they're very friendly and want to come see if I have any 'offerings.' There were about a dozen on the patio when I took this photo, but I didn't want to move and scare them. This one's my favorite, and is not shy in the least.

Mimi, What do your kitties think of your guests?

Apr 10, 2016 04:27 AM
Mimi Foster

Oh, I have no kitties (or dogs), Gail. It's hard enough cleaning up after these guys

That is a crew.  And obviously not intimidated at all.  Mark

No, but in a herd, they can be a little intimidating, Don ;)

You have really nice neighbors, Mimi!  I live close to the American River Parkway.  I often get critters who meander into the neighborhood.  However, I haven't seen deer anywhere but on the parkway, thus far.

Mimi Foster

It's been a lot of fun, Myrl, to have them so tame and having their babies in our yard. Their 'residue,' however, is a little annoying ;)

Deer wander all through Minot ND Mimi Foster due to our river valley and many coolies in town. It's always fun to see them, an occassional moose, and many, many turkeys and geese.

I love moose. Haven't seen any turkeys. I have a lot of grass and leaves, so they love to hang out. (See picture below)

Mimi- well, I love your patio guests!  When we lived in Leesburg, one of my greatest pleasures was standing at the window and watching the deer on the edge of the woods.

The day after we moved in, one of them had two babies in our yard. It was so exciting, and I have 'taken care of them' ever since, Kathy. But you have your own brand of wildlife where you live, and it's beautiful to see.

I like them at a distance. But far enough away to stay out of my garden and flowerbeds.

Mimi Foster

Surprisingly, they haven't done much damage to the flowers. But oh, my word, the yard is big, and there is deer poop EVERYWHERE.

Mimi,  I would so love your neighbors.  I’d not mind cleaning up after them … much easier than the kind of crap other neighbors of the human variety we often have to deal with.

Apr 11, 2016 12:31 AM
Mimi Foster

So true, Kathleen. But it's so hard to clean it up . . . the little pellets spray everywhere when there are a dozen out there most days. I kept up with it until winter, and now I'm sorry I stopped. LOL

Our deer in the area stay clear because of our doggies.  However, at night they roam around and nibble at various plants - they know when the dogs are sleeping. :) I love them and applaud your attitude. I'm sure they make a few messes for you. Ha.

Apr 11, 2016 02:04 AM
Mimi Foster

A few indeed, Debb :) Because of our lifestyle, we made a conscious decision not to get a dog when we moved in here. Us and the next door neighbor are probably the only two who don't have a dog, so we're the 'safe houses.' We leave the gate between the yards open so they can come and go at will LOL

We have around 18 deer and lots of babies in the neighborhood.  Even when my chocolate lab, Zeke, chases them out of the yard...they continue to return.

Apr 11, 2016 03:53 AM
Mimi Foster

It is my understanding that, under normal conditions, they don't ever get more than a mile or so from where they were born, and they come back year after year to have babies where they were born. I guess if they're going to be such close neighbors, I better find out more about them. :)

Hi Mimi -- although I live more of a city lifestyle than many who have commented, we still see deer out and about not that far away in the hills.  I am surprised to read that your guests don't disturb your garden --- they can be very adventurous eaters.

It was my first summer here, Michael, so I'm not counting on being spared for too long. ;)

Hi Mimi Foster How are you doing. I've been a little under the weather (had a cold) and have had to limit my AR time to about 15 minutes a day. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner.

Thank you for the note.

And are you sure you don't need a permit for these pets? It seems harboring wild animals is against the law in most jurisdictions.

Mims~I've had lots of visitors eat out of my hand, including birds at our new "ranch". It's quite exhilarating having them be this trusting, isn't it?? Oh, what humans could learn from nature.

Okay - I've been gone long enough that I don't know about the ranch. I'll have to check it out. Congratulations!
