YONKERS, NY – April 6, 2016 – Mayor Mike Spano this week announced his selection of Yonkers volunteers for the third annual nationwide Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service, spotlighting the impact of national service and thanking those who serve in their communities. Mayor Spano honored nine local volunteers from the Yonkers community, specifically who donate their time to a variety of charitable organizations, sponsored by Volunteer New York. All of the awarded honorees contribute to Yonkers non-profit organizations, assisting those in the local community.

“Yonkers is a city of ordinary people who do extraordinary things each and every day – those volunteers who give of themselves to their communities and contribute to making Yonkers a more vibrant place to live,” said Mayor Spano. “They don’t do it for the recognition or the awards but rather the knowledge that their efforts help our community is reward enough for them.”

Mayor Spano recognized the following volunteers for their years of service in the Yonkers:

·  Jesan Spencer – Volunteer New York!

Ms. Spencer serves as site captain and volunteer ambassador for Volunteer NY! and often extends her time after work to assist volunteers as well as volunteering weekly at a local Yonkers school.

· Mary Mullday – WESTCOP Foster Grandparent Program

Sister Mary is a Marynoll Sister who for 23 years has  served the Yonkers community. She currently works at Foster Grandparents as well as Cedar Place Elementary School and St. Joseph’s Nursing Home.

· Robert Anthony – Westchester Seniors Out Speaking (WSOS)

Mr. Anthony has over 15 years with WSOS. He is a welcomed face at senior centers throughout the area, helping educate seniors on Medicare and with health issues through the Medicare Minutes and as a presenter with a Health Advocacy program.  Bob’s gentle caring manner makes him a favorite with all who come in contact with him.

· Angela Morris – Grandpower Advocate, Family Service Society of Westchester

Ms. Morris advocates for grandparent and relative caregivers. Ms. Morris is vocal with her efforts to keep kinship care issues on the county and state agenda. In fact, Angela cares for six grandchildren of her own from ages 6-19.  Despite how busy she is, she takes times to be present at caregiver hearings or meetings for those who need her assistance. Mr. Morris demonstrates a generosity of spirit and a vast capacity to give.

· Ann Kachmar – St. John’s Riverside Hospital

Ms. Kachmar serves as the President of the St. John’s Riverside Auxiliary. Since 2000, Ann has been committed to St. John’s as evident in the long hours she gives each week to the hospital.  From gift shop manager to organizing St. John’s annual tag sale, it’s obvious Ann’s loyalty and commitment has left an impressionable mark on the community.

· Joan Frutkin - JCY Westchester Community Partners

Ms. Frutkin is an avid volunteer with JCY Westchester Community Partners. Through the SMART program, Joan has mentored a young student now for three years, seeing him blossom with his literacy skills. She also volunteers with JCY’s Summer Reading Buddies, serves as a docent in the Holocaust Remembrance Program and routinely serves as a good will ambassador for JCY at many public events.

· Maria Miehle — Hudson River Museum

A lifelong resident of Yonkers and retired teacher of Yonkers schools, Ms. Meihle has spent 16 years with the Museum, managing the corps of volunteers with mailings, workshops and more.  She often leads interactive tours for school children and adults and serves as a mentor to a Docent in Training, giving more of her time and expertise. Maria is a distinct and outstanding contributor to the Yonkers community.

· Ed Nash —RideConnect

As a volunteer driver, Mr. Nash provides transportation to the area’s aging population through RideConnect so they can go to doctor appointments, shop and attend community events. Last year he provided 127 rides and logged 2,600 miles in his own car to serve the Yonkers community.

· Sara Dennehy – St. Joseph’s Medical Center

As a volunteer at St. Joseph’s, Sara works 2 -5 days a week to assist patients – plans birthday parties, sets up bingo games, arts and crafts and more.  Sara often helps raise money to afford baseball game and zoo trips for the residents and even knits blankets for veterans and expectant moms. Through her 23 years of service, Sara is always smiling and caring for the residents, their families, the volunteers, staff and visitors.

“Volunteer New York! is so proud to join Yonkers’ celebration of national service,” said Alisa Kesten, Executive Director of Volunteer New York. “Through our RSVP of Westchester program that engages so many of the City’s caring adults 55 years and older, it is clear that these volunteers have great impact in in areas of education, independent living, financial stability and healthy futures.”

The Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service is led by the Corporation for National and Community Service, joining mayors across the country to shine a spotlight on the positive impact of national service and thank those who serve in their communities. The nine honorees were selected by Mayor Spano and are part of RSVP of Westchester through Volunteer New York. RSVP is America’s largest volunteer network for people aged 55 and older who give of their time and share their expertise to help solve local community concerns.
