Matryoshka Nesting Dolls aka Russian Wooden Stacking Doll

By
Real Estate Agent with Barcode Properties BRE # 01828994

If you have ever had Russian friends, or walked into a Russian store, you have probably seen these wooden dolls. They can be painted in many different ways; some are very funny and look like a set of politicians, the Santa Clause family, or even superheroes.

Each of these stacking dolls, but the very tiniest last one, splits in half at the mid section and reveal a smaller doll inside.

My matreshkasThis set is one of mine. There are 9 of them and they represent a more modern version of a family, where you can notice the man to be a main largest figure.

But in the original set of Matriarchies, you'll find only female dolls: matrons, since Matryoshka has  a Latin root , that means ''mother''. The nesting dolls symbolize motherhood: from the oldest ''babushka''/grandmother who basically started the family to the youngest baby who is protected and cared by all older family members. A mother gives birth to her baby,  and her baby gives birth to her kids, and so on, like never ending circle of life... keeping the family strong and large through generations.

Here is a pictures of a traditional set,

from WikipediA ➡️ ➡️ ➡️

Any family starts with a woman who eventually becomes the oldest: babushka and continues through generations from mother to daughter, representing importance of motherhood and fertility.

This blog is inspired by Endre Barath and you can find his post here:) Thank you Endre for your question. I truly appreciate this opportunity to write about a subject that is close to my heritage!

Some of my clients have the nesting dolls and they look beautiful in any home.

Here is a fun fact to know about Matriarchies

''The largest set of Russian dolls is a 51-piece set hand-painted by Youlia Bereznitskaia (Russia). The largest measures 1 ft 9.25 in (53.97 cm) in height, the smallest 0.125 in (0.31 cm) in height. The set was completed on 25 April 2003. When all 51 pieces are lined up together touching, they measure 11 ft 2.25 in length.'' ~ from Guinness World Records.

That IS interesting information - I had no idea what the nesting dolls represented, although I have seen them before. Thanks for sharing.

Kat Palmiotti , they came to Russia probably from China or Japan, those are much older cultures, but they have similar nesting toys.

I had a set many years ago. No idea what happened to it. I must have decided to let it go during a move.

Good morning Inna. I love these dolls and have several sets I bought in Russia when I was there. Both sides of my family were from Latvia which was part of Russia when they lived there. Great history here. I never knew.

Inna, this post brought back some great memories on my teacher exchange visit to Russia!  Our host teacher, Tatyana Vascillevena, admonished us not to buy the "touristy" and cheap (made in China) Matryoshka Dolls in St. Petersburg or Moscow and wait till we arrived in her home city of Kirov.  She did not dissapoint as she took us directly to the factory just outside of town.  The smell of the fresh birch was intoxicating!

Here is one of my favorites that I bought in Kirov:

And the dolls nested inside:

Thanks for the complete explanation on the history of these beautiful works of art and tradition.

Nice post on the dolls.  My family on my father's side did not have these dollas, although I knew about them.  I like their symbolism.  Wishing you a great day.  A

Hi Inna,

I saw Endre Barath, Jr. 's post which compelled me to drop by here too.

When I was in Russia in the 1990's, I remembered the Gorbachev/Reagan ones, which of course, were the kitzhy ones aimed at tourists.  BUT there were some truly beautiful ones in some of the shops of Nivesky Prospekt (from memory without using google) that were truly works of art.

lol, yes, they paint anything on them:)

And it can be not easy to find old style hand painted dolls.

Inna Ivchenko Thank you for lovely post about Matryoshka nesting dolls.  I have admired them in homes of several Russian friends over the years but didn't realize that the original origin might be China or Japan. It is also wonderful to learn more about our ActiveRain members' heritage.
