I am not ready to give it up, yet.

I am getting a few things ready for one of the most important meetings I have had in years tomorrow morning. I start reflecting upon my day and think of my favorite part of my job. As a Realtor I am allowed the freedom of working my own schedule. I am so blessed that my job allows me to be able to enjoy a beautiful drive every morning with my son, who is 7 and in 1st grade. We past the pregnant cows and horses and watch them grow, watch them with their babies after they are born. It's the one of the best parts of my day. The second best part of my day is picking my son up from school, taking a drive to our faorite spot at Honu'apu, getting ice cream. I am so lucky and NOT ready to give this up. My son has been bugging me for months to let him ride the bus. I tell, no. I am not ready to give up my special time with my son. So, we talk about it. I tell him next year. So, there is 5 weeks left of school and next year will be upon us. I promised my son he can take the bus. I am not ready to give it up, yet... it's the best part of my job, the best part of my day. But a promise is a promise. A whole year until my daughter starts school and I can start taking her to school and again, I can be whole.

Unfortunately you have to let them grow up. At least you have the memories to rely on as he does grow up.

Meet him in the middle, either take him in the morning and let him ride the bus home, or vice versa.

I agree with Marc, compromise with him.  Either take him to school or vice versa, or let him take the bus 1,2,3 days a week and you the rest of the week.  It's great you are enjoying your son.  Too many people just push their kids out the door and tell them to go to school. 40 years from now they'll be sorry...been there/done that

Sean, I know I have no choice but to let him grow up and I am so thankful for the memories and the opportunity.

How sweet of you!!  So many people miss these moments altogether with the excuse that they are too busy to take the kids to school - they put them on the bus or in someone else's car.  I commend you for being a great Dad and role model.  And unfortunately, they do grow up but as long as they know you are there for them - they don't go far..... Good luck and KUDOS to you.

Marc, my wife has tried for months to get me to compromise with the one way or the other. I declined! That's why I promised next year.

Pat, Nothing says if he rides the bus to school you can't pick him up.  You keep your promise and still get to spend quality time in the afternoon.

One of the benefits of our job is flexible time.  One of the negatives is I rarely get to take advantage of it.

Patrick,

I have taken my daughter to school each and every day, but a handful...she is now in 8th grade and I wouldn't trade it for the world. We solve all of the worlds problems on the way to school. She went through that phase, so I let her ride the bus occasionally when she was smaller. Now, she would rather DIE than ride the bus.....I"m proud of you! What a great dad.

Tanks Elizabeth, I was hoping that when it comes time to drive my daughter my son might reconsider. We will see.

Aloha Patrick

I also have a 7 year old in first grade - who wants to ride the Bus, I live to close, so we took him farther away and let him ride it to school - unreal experience for both of us! He stood 2 inches taller for the rest of the week.

Part 2 to bus ride - Scariest moment so far ! He wanted to ride the bus home? Ok, we met him at school, put him on the  bus, told the bus driver where to let him off - not to hard - it was the first stop! Ok bus pulls out of parking lot, my wife gets cut off by the other 2 buses pulling out, no problem, just pick him up at the first bus stop - GUESS WAT - he's not there!!! now my wife is following three buses up Lako street! They get to the highway - 1 turns right, 1 turns left, 1 goes straight up - which bus is his - my wife panics - calls me franticly, I am in a meeting, I go outside and calm her down - tell her i will call the school, I call the school - the number they have for the bus company - no answer - ok now I start panicking, one of the  guys at my meeting just happens to know the cell number for one of the head honchos at Roberts Hawaii - the school bus contractor - he was still riding around on the bus, and they returned him to the correct bus stop.

HE NOW OWNS A CELL PHONE !!!

Bottom line it was a very proud day as a father to put my son on the bus and watch his expression - we did it a few times and now he is over it. I get to take him to school everyday - and I know how you feel!

Good luck Patrick

Aloha, and have a great day

Lance, thanks a lot for helping me panick about the future! Hopefully this idoes not turn into a nightmare next year riding the bus. My son knows his way around and would know exactly how to get home, but ... would he be paying attention before he ended up in Ocean View? ... well, I just don't know.
