Sherrills Ford is a small town on the northwestern corner of Lake Norman best known for its low population density and proximity to the lake. If you’d rather see trees than neighbors then Sherrills Ford might be your ticket!
But first, you may live in Sherrills Ford and still not know how the small Catawba County town got its name.
Well, that dates back to about 1747 when a European named Adam Sherrill forded the Catawba River. Yes, he crossed the river and was afforded the honor of naming a town. Sherrill’s Ford was born, but the apostrophe has since been dropped from the name.

Only about 6,000 people make Sherrills Ford home. In 2000, the population was less than 1,000, but there is only so much shoreline along Lake Norman – 520 miles of it to be exact. Even the areas seemingly furthest from civilization are destined to be developed to take advantage of the beautiful waterfront views.
Sherrills Ford is not as far away from amenities as you might believe if you look at a map. From Northview Harbour neighborhood, one of the most northern neighborhoods in Sherrills Ford, it is approximately 20 minutes southeast to I-77 in Mooresville. From there, all the towns along the eastern shore of Lake Norman, such as Davidson, Cornelius and Huntersville, are a short drive away. Shopping and dining in Birkdale Village is about 15 minutes south on I-77.
A daily commute to Charlotte might be a stretch, but it is doable at about 38 miles or 45 minutes without traffic. If work takes you west to Hickory then the commute is also 40 minutes.
Sherrills Ford is mostly small business and residential, but Duke Energy’s Marshall Steam Station is located there. The coal plant produces enough electricity to power about 2 million homes and has been in operation since 1965.
Do not let this small town fool you! There are some spectactular lake-front homes in Sherrills Ford in the handful of neighborhoods in the town. You can find homes from the $100,000s all the way to spectacular estates costing more than $3 million.
Sherrills Ford has 60 neighborhoods, but there is not a lot of turnover. Only 25 neighborhoods have had something sell in the last 2 years. The 6 best-selling neighborhoods are sure to have something for everyone.
They are: Anchors Landing, Lakepointe South, Northview Harbour, Pointe Norman, Sherwood Shores and White Dove Estates.
There are also some spectacular properties not part of planned subdivisions. As of April 13, these 96 properties are available in Sherrills Ford.
When you want a meal out, you will not find a lot of chain restaurants in the area. Sherrills Ford does have some local restaurants that are lauded for great food and down-home atmosphere, though.
Lineberger’s Cattle Co. Steakhouse and Saloon might be the most well known. It’s located on N.C. 50 to the west toward Denver. Other notables in Sherrills Ford: Boss Hog BBQ Restaurant; The Landing Restaurant, where you can arrive by boat or car; and Horsefeathers Roadhouse.
The Catawba County schools that serve Sherrills Ford students are: Sherrills Ford Elementary, Mill Creek Middle School and Bandys High School.
If you love to be in the center of the action then Sherrills Ford is probably not for you.
