Animals of the MLS

Real Estate Broker/Owner with Zion Realty

Finally back to the feline variety in this week's Animals of the MLS. This kitty appears to have been captured contemplating life and it's meaning. Just what sort of reflective thoughts are running through the mind of our concerned cat? Perhaps they're envisioning all of the backyard birds they let slip through their paws. They could also be wondering if today's the day they seek help for their catnip addiction because it seems to be getting out of control and it's tearing the family apart. Whatever the case may be, I bet after sitting on the counter deep in thought this tabby laid down for a long afternoon nap to rest their weary head.

I don't know if it was planned out or not but it's not often a homeowner can expertly design a kitchen around the color of their pet. Everything in this picture seems to match the cat. The granite, the tile floors, the cabinets, the chairs, the table, and even the decorative ceramic pig on the counter all share the same color scheme. I've heard of pet owners being obsessed with their animals but to decorate a house based upon them is taking matters to a different level! All kidding aside I would bet some serious cash that this kitty greeted potential home shoppers as they entered the house and gave them a personal guided tour around the interior. They seem right at home with the agent snapping photos and I can't imagine they would suddenly have stage fright with any other stranger who would enter their domain.

As for the picture itself, besides the contemplative kitty, it's a little blurry and too narrow a scope to grasp the entire space. It's certainly a clean and neutral room but a wide angle lens would have done wonders for showing the entirety of this kitchen. This is also a perfect example of when you should use a stager to warm up an otherwise bland and lifeless area of the home. There needs to be more color to bring some pizazz to an area of the home where a lot of time will be spent. Overall this isn't the worst Animals of the MLS photo I've seen but a few extra touches could have made it much better.

You're right, the kitchen seems to be "accented" by a perfectly matched cat to compliment the scene!

At first glance the thought of a ceramic cookie jar captured me Nicole.

Lol. It does seem as if the kitchen was planned ala "kitty color palette." With that said, I'm with Alexandra, there no way in hell I'd eat at their house. Yuk, pets do not belong on counter-tops - ever.

Cat lovers will appreciate this, even though it might not be right for the MLS - cat non-lovers won't. Perhaps this one is thinking about a meal?

For all the reasons above, plus more, I dont think pets should ever be in the MLS photos.  Nor, people, either.  For me, as a buyer, that would be enough for me to quite possibly move on to the next property.

Let's  just say I do not share the same affinity for the Felines that many others do.

I think it probably is best to leave the animals out of the photos.  Some folks don't like pets... or are allergic!

Nothing says "eat here" more than cat butt on the kitchen bar.  Ick.  I love cats, have 4 currently.  Do my best to keep them off the kitchen counters.  I know it might sometimes occur when I'm sleeping or not home, but ick ick ick.

Nicole, I cringed looking at the kitty sitting on the counter. I wonder where else her paws and backside have been. Yuck!

Mark - It's funny to see them in the MLS but it's a sure sign of unprofessional representation.

Alexandra - Every once in a while our cat will try and press her luck by jumping up on the counter. She gets chastised and chased away quickly.

Bob - I don't let our cat on any surface other than the floor and the box she sleeps in. No furniture, no counters, no anything.

Kat - It's a horrible first impression. Even if it's nice and clean when you get there, in the back of your mind you'll still see that cat on the counter.

Chris - Sometimes our subconscious is more powerful than we think!

Bliz - It's a must have. Right after granite counter-tops and stainless steel appliances.

Dick - Our cat is outside 75% of the time. Even during the Summer. She was a stray we took in and she still loves being outside roaming. If we try and keep her inside she'll sit at the door and protest until we let her out.

Nina - Neither would I. It's front and center so I'm pretty sure the agent saw it and just didn't care.

Brian - Roger is NOT a fan of felines.

Patricia - A lot of dirty, germ filled places!

George - Waiting for dinner, someone to pet them, or just wanted to be where the action was at.

Grant - It's not bad. It could use a few tweaks but it's not the worst.

Myrl - I wonder if the rest of the house is like that too!

Kevin - It's posing as if it could be one.

Debb - If they let the cat up on the counters I'm sure their furniture is also full of fur. My black pants would look like a woolly winter's coat.

Patricia - Thanks so much Patricia. This is a fun post to write every week.

Jeff - Regardless of if you like them or not, I think any home shopper would be turned off by this picture.

John - I've had buyers not view a property because of pets. It happens.

Joan - The allergies are a big reason some won't view homes with pets.

Tammy - But you'd have the sense enough not to feature it on an MLS listing of your home.

Amanda - Places you can only imagine. Which is why it's so inappropriate.

Cute cat, but the thought of it roaming the kitchen counters...I would have to pass on a meal.

Well, you had me MEOW. Yes, kitty is a bit blurry, maybe didn't sit quite as still as this realtor would have liked, but certainly adds a bit of necessary decor to a stark space...although I do find the colors very inviting for a kitchen.

Hello Nicole,  I needed come see what you offered today in that it seems you had Kat Palmiotti on the run the other day with her photo's and a persistent pooch.  These colors do match the cat perfectly.  Funny.  Mark

The cat must have been moving as it is a little blurry.  Gross to think about eating off of those counters after a cat has made itself home there.
