'We live in a global community,' per Sophia Veffer, Holocaust survivor. What is happening in the world around us impacts us whether we recognize it or choose to ignore it.
Sophia, a soft spoken elderly woman with a powerful message, sat as she spoke about her personal story of survival and that of the six million Jews who did not. At this afternoon's Community Holocaust Rembrance Program, Sophia did not concentrate on the horrors of the holocaust but described the ordinary people who fell into one of four categories.
- The Perpertrators - they live among us, bigots, bullies with zero tolerance for others who may be different (in Mary's words--the Archie Bunkers)
- The Victims - often minorities, not well-liked
- The By-standers -- let it happen, ignore, 'head in the sand'
- The Rescuers or Upstanders -- willing to risk themselves to help others
Very, very quietly at the end Sophia directed the audience to ask ourselves.
Which category do I fall into?
