Holey Moley!

Holey Moley!

It doesn't matter how you spell it.  I spelled the first word "holey" for a reason.

The expression "Holy Moley!" has some synonyms perhaps.  Holy smoke.  Holy mackerel.  Holy cow.

Whatever.

During home inspections I make it a point to see if exhaust vents are operating properly.

I look for things - clogs, like bird nests or dryer lint.  Sometimes large wasp nests have developed inside, blocking the flap's ability to open or close.

Or I will turn on the fan and see if the flap is operating correctly.

Looking up I spied one high on the wall in the rear of a house the other day, and it just looked odd.  But from that distance it was too small to determine what was going on.

Too high to get to I had to look at it with my 20X binoculars.

To tell the truth, this one was a first for me!  It took a few tries to get the telescopic lens to focus properly on such a small area at that distance, but I snapped a photo that is clear enough to see what is going on.

Apparently this homeowner had had problems with things getting into his vents!  Birds, bees, whatever.  He climbed up a monster ladder with a drill in hand, along with some sheet metal screws, and made it so those pesky animals could not get in again!  Original problem solved!

The NEW problem was that after the grand "fix" the bathroom exhaust could not really vent.  The old toilet paper test to see if the fan had enough umph to hold a piece of toilet paper in place failed miserably.  How could it work!?

So, from down below, when I first saw this, I said, "Holey Moley!"  Get it now?

My recommendation:  seeing things for the first time does not mean understanding cannot be had!   My clients and I understood that this "fix" did not work entirely.  Sure, it solved the bird problem, but created another problem in its place.  Getting something like the vent cover to the right would have resolved everything in a much better way.   And I bet it's not expensive!

P.s.  Don't put a cover like the one on the right over your dryer vent opening!  It will clog in a New York minute!  Where I live it will clog in a Virginia minute.

Very interesting read. I would never want to block the vents in a way to trap the lint and cause a fire. There are other rememdies as Jay points out.
