What's great about this flick is that it doesn't pretend to be a moralizing melodrama about abstinence and teen sex. After experimenting with sex with her best friend, (who she is in love with and he is in love with her, but neither of them wants to admit it first), Juno winds up with a bun in the oven. Juno is a smart-mouth character, a teenager who finds out she's pregnant, and plays her like a real person, flawed and confused on the inside but in no way ready to drop her defenses. Her father, when faced with the news of his eldest's indiscretion, doesn't fly off the handle or even raise his voice. Instead, he reacts with calm and genuine concern. It's not that he isn't angry, he is, but he's also smart enough to understand that's not going to get him anywhere. Instead, he steps up and assumes the role of protector. And his wife, Juno's step-mother, who could easily be slotted into the bad guy role, defies expectations by being real, by supporting her wayward kid, even when she doesn't always believe that kid is making the right choices. Juno struggles with making difficult choices and tries to handle her pregnancy and the complicated decisions about her coming baby. The story is surprisingly engrossing, and goes a few places I wouldn't have predicted - it keeps toying with how you should feel about adoptive parents.
I love Juno... she's smart, sarcastic, immature, and vulnerable. At one point, she tells her father, "I don't know what kind of girl I am," but she's got a better idea of who she is as a person at 16 than most of the people I knew in college. I highly recommend it.

Hi Vincent - I actually bought this movie because I knew I'd like it enough to watch more than once. Although I think it made that choice seem a little too easy, I also really enjoyed it. Great characters.

Chris- I couldn't imagine how hard it would be to make a life altering decision like the one she had to make. I do agree with you that it was a bit oversimplified... I enjoyed it nonetheless. I can't wait to see what other roles she decides to accept in the coming years.
Saw it last week...PRETTY good. The soundtrack songs were the best part. Heard a ton of talk about how she doesn't speak like a 16 old...aI think that's crap- she speaks exactly like a 16 year old with half a brain.
Great movie! I loved that the parents told her it was a stupid thing-getting knocked up, but went on to support her decision-HER DECISION! They didn't tell her what to do-gave advice, but supported her either way. The ultra sound scene was great!

I watched this last night and really enjoyed it. Juno seemed like a very real person as did Bleeker. I thought Allison Janey did as superb job as the stepmom. The performances of Jennifer Garner and Justin Bateman were so well done that there was no clear cut take on I like them or I don't like them. These two actors made their characters the older, post college versions of what Juno and Bleeker might one day be themselves. Wonderful film that also had quite a lot of laughs!
