What Does it Mean to be Published in a Nationwide Real Estate Magazine?

Since 2009, I've been fortunate enough to be published (or interviewed) a total of seven times in various nationwide real estate publications. That list of publications included Realtor Magazine, the NAR "Legislative Live Blog", The Wall Street Journal  and The Residential Specialist Magazine  (published by the Council of Residential Specialists).

The first of these published interviews took place in 2009 and 2010, with two interviews by Regina Ludes for The Residential Specialist Magazine, one entitled "Letter Perfect" and the second entitled "State of the Markets" (about the Minneapolis & Saint Paul Minnesota real estate market).

Also in mid-2010, I was interviewed by Stacey Moncrieff with Realtor Magazine, about the proposal to modify Article 10 of the Realtor Code of Ethics to prohibit discrimination in real estate on the basis of sexual orientation (Stacey phoned me at 11:15 pm on May 13, 2010 while I was in the lobby of the Wardman Park Marriott hotel in Washington, D.C. and I spent nearly an hour wandering around the ground level of the hotel during her telephone interview from Chicago). One of my favorite quotes from that Realtor Magazine  article was, "Eric Kodner's Madeline Island Real Estate Blog on ActiveRain is a lively mix of business and human interest stories".

2011 was a big year for interviews by major real estate magazines. The real estate recovery was underway and market activity was showing encouraging signs of improvement. In January of 2011, I was interviewed by S. Mitra Kalita with The Wall Street Journal, for an article entitled "Market for Vacation Homes is on the Rise" (Kalita is now the managing editor for editorial strategy at the Los Angeles Times).

In May of 2011, I was interviewed and later quoted by Brian Copeland in the NAR "Legislative Live Blog", discussing the work of the National Association of Realtors Diversity Committee during the 2011 NAR Midyear Legislative Meetings in Washington, D.C.

In March of 2012, I was again quoted in an article published in The Residential Specialist  about using Facebook for real estate.

Most recently, in December of 2013, I was invited to travel to Chicago to serve as Guest Editor for the January-February 2014 issue of Realtor Magazine. Publisher Stacey Moncrieff confided in me that I would be the first Guest Editor for an issue of Realtor Magazine  who did not  fall into the category of "under thirty" Realtors who served as Guest Editors during the previous two years since that column was created (I was followed in that role of Realtor Magazine  Guest Editor by CRS President-Elect Leigh Brown, in March of 2014).

Being interviewed or quoted in a nationwide real estate publication certainly doesn't confer any sort of celebrity status. There are no "points" given or titles conferred on the recipient of this honor. Instead, it's a privilege to be granted the opportunity to be heard by your peers and to briefly address a nationwide community of colleagues. I'm grateful to have been invited to participate on that level.

Here on ActiveRain, we self-publish. We are independent bloggers, yet we're part of a large and well-known community.  We participate in that community of fellow bloggers and we also hope to reach beyond that community, maybe even building and sustaining a healthy readership among current and future clients.

Finally, I suppose one could conclude that being asked more than once to be interviewed or quoted or to contribute material to an article in one of these publications may be a sign that you just might be doing something right in your industry after all.

Eric, when Mitra Kalita was here in DC with the Washington Post, I was her listing agent on the sale of her old house and buyer broker on the purchase of her new one.  She really does get around!

Gabe Sanders, I do try to mention some of these articles in promotional material in situations when I think it's meaningful.

Pat Kennedy, it was a nice surprise to be interviewed by Mitra. She's now with the Los Angeles Times. A very talented young lady!
