Blessing of the Fleet in Hernando Beach Florida 2016
The Hernando Beach Yacht Club opened the boating season with its annual Blessing of the Fleet yesterday. A land ceremony attended club members, guests and local dignitaries was followed by the blessing of each boat by a local chaplain.
Boaters then proceeded down Marlin Canal in Hernando Beach to the open water of the Gulf of Mexico for a wreath laying ceremony honoring any seafarers who have lost their lives at sea.
The event was open to the public. The festivities continued after boaters returned with a dinner at the Hernando Beach Yacht Club.
The Blessing of the Fleet is a century old tradition to ensure the safety of seaman and vessels. It it thought to have originated in the Mediterranean and is still celebrated today.
