Austin has been dubbed the #1 City in the Nation by Forbes Magazine and grabs this title because of its superlative economy! With a jump of 13.2 percent in Austin’s population from 2010–2014, it was the highest increase in any of the cities studied. The growth is made up of mainly young, educated millennials and households with children. Austin has become a people magnet and the newcomers are eager to embrace the “Keep Austin Weird” slogan.
Four out of the 10 top cities Forbes chose were in Texas: Austin, Houston, Dallas-Ft Worth and San Antonio. Each city exhibits a distinct flavor. What do they have in common? They each enjoyed well above the national average of 8.1% double digit job growth from 2010- 2014. Couple that with income growth well above the national average and you’ve got a model that many cities would like to clone.
It appears there are two distinct urban models emerging and our country is making room for both of them to claim a piece of the future. One is for the elite and these areas will dominate various key tech sectors and will continue to leverage their well-educated populations. The Texas model offers a diversified economy driven by lower cost of living which in turn offers more for middle class families as well as an increase in well-educated populations.
