When tragedy affects your selling area....Wylie Texas Hailstorm 2016
Wylie, Texas has been my home since 1994. That is just before a tornado hit in 1993 and the last major storm affecting our town was a hail storm in 2003. That was before my real estate days and all I remember is my daughter getting a new car ( her car was totaled due to hail) and getting a new roof. There were roofers and roofing signs everywhere. The damage was bad but not as bad as the last 2 hail storms in Wylie, 13 years later.
On March 23, 2016 a hail storm came through and damaged a large percentage of the homes and cars in Wylie, Texas. I only got hail damage on two vehicles as I had recently sold my home. The affected homeowners were calling their insurance adjustor's, receiving checks, getting new roofs and repairing their vehicles when BAM....another hail storm hits Wylie again on April 11, 2016 late in the evening. There was softball size hail and some reports of grapefruit size hail!
The hail damaged not only roofs but roof decks & interiors of homes, resulting in flooding that soaked into ceilings, walls, carpets and furniture. Many people reported broken windows all around their homes leading to glass in the carpets. I can only imagine the noise of hail crashing into windows would have made!
Estimated property damage of approximately 80% of the homes in Wylie is up to $300 million with many uninsured properties.
A community project was started by a local church who launched www.rebuildwylie.org . About $25,000 has been raised and pledged. Also the City of Wylie waived building permits/inspection fees for repairs.
There are alot of people hurting and living in homes that are partially or fully damaged.
My kids grew up in this town and I have lived here for over 20 years. You see this type of thing on the news and you feel bad but realize there is not much you can do. But when it hits YOUR town there are many things you can do:
