Knob and Tube Wiring Quick Facts

In areas with older homes we all have seen or are going to see Knob and tube wiring.  In my post today I wanted to post some "Quick Facts" about old K&T (knob and tube).

 Knob and tube wiring

K&T Limitations:

  • Usually Restricted to a Maximum of 60 amp service
  • Not a grounded system making it more hazardous than modern wiring
  • Two-Prong Receptacles, Restrict the use of some Kitchen Appliances
  • The wire is generally old, and its insulation may no longer be intact

While it is true that use in Living areas (Bedrooms, Living rooms, etc) pose very little risk, The true risk comes around water.  With an ungrounded wiring system we have a much greater chance of risk and possible harm

Safety Tips:

  1. Never replace blown fuses with larger amp fuses
  2. Don't cut the Grounding (third or bottom) plug to fit in a non grounded two-hole receptacle
  3. Don't use outlet plugs to connect several appliances, lamps, etc to one receptacle

K&T on it's own is a product that worked well for its time, but as with everything its time has come and gone.

As our uses of electricity have changed as well as our knowledge of safe electric practices have increased, it is a good idea to have any home with active or live knob and tube evaluated by a licensed electrician.
