Front Porch Makeover - What to do with these planters...
Several years ago we remodeled our home and added a beautiful front porch with columns. The front door was also replaced with 2 sidelights which I absolutely love. Well worth the investment and extra work that was required to make room for this new door assembly.
The dead and dried out plants that were in the existing pots that I had on either side of the front door entry had seen better days. So, my mission was to replace them and have the front entry looking beautiful again.
I considered replacing the pots too, but I decided to save the money and stay with what I already had there. I purchased these pots several years ago. They were originallly a terra cotta color, but I painted them black to match my front door. As time goes on I may replace them, for right now they seemed to work well.
I headed out to Lowe's Garden Center and Home Depot to see what options were available. I came across these beautiful topiary plants at Lowe's. I have admired topiary plants before, but they were always very expensive and I never found the exact size that I needed for my location and existing containers.
They are "Globulus Topiary Eugenia" aka Eugenia Topiary. They seem to like morning sunlight, which is perfect for this location on my front porch. Buying the plants, is one thing... keeping them alive and thriving in this location has always been a challenge. The morning sun comes in for just a few hours and then only light. The main challenge though will be to remember to keep them watered....and they will require trimming...
I decided to take a chance and added them to the cart. I also picked up a few varigated ivy, and coleus plants to add along the bottom of the planters hoping they will eventually spill out of the containers and add to the visual appeal of the topiaries.
Removing the old dead plants and root systems was a little more of a challenge than what I had originally expected, but I prevailed. I also purchased some new potting soil to add to the planters.
So here's the big reveal...
I am so happy with the results!
