Safety is FIRST and FOREMOST in this business --- not the check!

Safety has to be first and foremost in our business.    The commission check is simply not worth our lives.

Do you get calls off your web site or other social sites?   Do they want to view properties right away?    Today I woke to four different emails from someone that spent two hours on my web site last night looking for a home.   (I was excited, because my analytics said it came from ActiveRain.)    She asked that I call her today and wanted to see one home.

We had a couple conversations, nothing that gave me the heeby jeebies, and actually was great conversations about buying a home.  It felt like first time buyers with a definite purpose in buying.  She told me about their family, their rental situation, and nothing gave me a reason to be worried.

I ALWAYS let someone (or more than one) know when I am showing to someone I don't know.    Just because the hairs on my neck did not stand up, doesn't mean everything!

I set the showing, and was at the home 10 minutes early (my normal).     At 6 minutes past, I left a message to see if they were still coming.   NOTHING.    At 15 minutes, I left.   This is so rude for a Sunday afternoon!    I texted my friends that it was a no show.

When I got home, I Googled her name.   She had been arrested in Utah.     WHAT????   It did not say why, and was released the same night, so maybe it was nothing.    Had I done this search early this morning, I would have never even set the showing.   AGAIN, not worth your life!

The Internet has been such a great help ---- you better believe I will do this search next time BEFORE setting the showing!

Joan, I think I'd feel relieved that she didn't show now that you've seen a little glimpse into her past. You're right, there is no commission check worth our lives. Online leads can take a little digging to make sure it's safe and even then sometimes it's best to take a friend. I'm glad you're ok!

When I read of these tragic episodes I always wonder what that agent did that I do every day. I then reevaluate how I handle customer service Joan Cox

Good morning, Joan -- your experience yesterday should be a clue or reminder for any agent who doesn't have a showing protocol.

Hi Joan Cox This is why it is a good policy to ALWAYS meet at your office prior to showing any houses. Get to know them and photocopy their ID.

Joan, I always require them to meet me first. I explain I have some required State paperwork to go over with them first. If they are unwilling to do that I pass.

Hi Joan... I've often said that a commission check isn't worth compromising my safety, my integrity, or my license. And sadly in today's world we have to be more vigilant than ever about our safety.

Wow, Joan. I had a buyer from Utah pull amost the same thing. I'm wondering if maybe she is the same buyer? I googled her first, though, and looked at her Facebook page to make sure she was the same person had emailed me, and then wrote her off as a nut case.
