In New England (MA, ME, NH, RI, VT) we have a law that requires a contractor or private land owner, to notify Dig Safe before any excavation project begins. This is to ensure underground utilities are not affected by the digging. The law also requires the area of excavation to be pre-marked with white stakes, flags or paint prior to notifying Dig Safe.
Callers to Dig Safe should be ready to provide information about the contractor, the work to be done, the location of the expected excavation and the scope of the project. The utility companies will visit the site and mark the location of their underground facilities. They use different color paint, flags & stakes to mark the location of their underground lines. Here are the color codes for the various utilities.
Dig Safe is funded by member utility companies.
Remember, to Be Safe...Dig Safe.
