How to succeed in real estate, a love story

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Christiansen Group Realty (260)704-0843

Amanda and I have always been entrepreneurs.

Amanda and I have not always been successful entrepreneurs.

Back in the day we tried an ebay business selling over stock clothing, hitting garage sales and turning a profit selling items we found at these sales online, and we even tried multi level marketing once.  GASP??!!  A pyramid scheme??

It was not for us.

While trying to make money on the side, we did both have full time jobs with benefits.  Booooring...

A former employer turned business partner and I started flipping foreclosures during the rush of 2005-2008.  He'd front the money, I'd do the work, and we would split the profits.

Then Amanda joined me and we both quit our jobs and jumped in full time.

We had a lot of fun doing the work together and found a fair amount of success, but it didn't last very long.

There were a lot of different reasons the success didn't continue, but there's no need to rehash that.

Our house flipping days were done but we had a crazy idea:  We know houses.  We know the market.  Amanda had her real estate license already for our business.  Why not become full time Realtors together?

I got my license and we jumped in.  It was late 2008, not exactly the best time to start in real estate as the market was in the tank.

We came in when many were leaving.  Our thought process was that if we could learn to succeed in a down market, it would benefit us down the road when things change.

Just kidding.

We had no idea what we were doing.  In hindsight I can see truth in that thought process, but really we were just two dumb kids trying to find our way without having to clock in anywhere.

In the beginning we struggled learning the cold harsh world of full time sales, as we both despised most salespeople.  We still do actually.

Real estate wasn't easy, and neither was working together.  You see, I'm your typical male.  I want to fix things.  When Amanda came to me with a problem I would automatically assume (like the dumb dumb I am) that she needed me to fix it.

HA!

We're both control freaks and we battled for a while until we eventually slid into the partnership we have today.

We're 100% equals and partners.  Our strengths are the exact opposite of each other, so it works out well.  She respects me and my skills just as much as I respect hers.

When we head to appointments together we have our "main" routine down, but are always calling audibles depending on the situation and personalities involved.

We know how the other one works in every real estate situation and conversation.  We know what the other is going to say before they even say it.

It's weird.  It's fun.  Every once in a while it's annoying, but you'll have that.

We aren't killers.  We aren't the top selling team in our office or the area.  We don't sell $100,000,000 a year.  Not even close.

What we are is a husband and wife team that are a fine oiled machine.

Sure, we've won awards, we've received a lot attention for our sales, but we're just two lost souls swimming in a real estate fishbowl...

We do our best to keep it real, provide excellent customer service, and keep surprises to our clients at a minimum.

Oh, and we really like each other too.  Christiansen Team Fort Wayne

What I saw, while reading your story was RESPECT for each other's differences, ENTHUSIASM for life in general, and the WILLINGNESS to fail and try again. Climbing the "Ladder of Life" together you will continue to succeed as long as the two of you never lose sight of the lessons learned along the way.

My best to from Palm Springs California!

Amanda and Jared, not every couple can work together because they can not find the balance you two have found.

It is great that together you have found the JOY of your work.

Best wishes.

My story is a little different, but it comes down to being able to work with my family around.  And all my life I have been on commission or self employed.  I do not do good with 9-5 clock punching.

Way cool!  My husband and I have software company together (it's designed for Property Tax Consultants), along with our IT Partner (he lives in Louisianna and we are in Houston, Texas).  I am a full time residential real estate broker as well (thankfully, my husband was never interested in selling real estate).  Partnerships are tough (a great man once said that they actually "suck" - excuse the language, but that's how he presented to us at a real estate seminar)!  It is extremely important that you two like each other; respect each other; and that your strengths are at the opposite polars (same with us; English is my strength; Math is his).  We too can barely tolerate sales people; yet, that is what we both do (he is the visionary and the demo jockey/sales person for the software).  You know when fate has paired you with the right "one" - when you have those intermittent, unspoken words/thoughts  - and the other one knows exactly what was meant!

Thanks for sharing your story; it's nice to read about love not war/hate!

Like everyone else I will add my compliments to your story and share mine. ,  It's funny I was on the same road, I worked full time in the tradeshow business and went to Interior Design school and got my certificate in home staging...and my real estate license all ready to go jump... and then Woops...it's 2008 and the bottom fell out leaving me no choice.  It's 8 years later and I didn't quit my day job as they say and I'm still here,  However I have gone part time at my career and working part time in the Real Estate business.  I find it great, frustrating, stressful and wonderful all at the same time.  My husband and I also opened a home watch business that he runs and we figured out we are better in 2 different offices and come together in the evening and bounce ideas off each other with support but working together will probably never happen.  Anyway thought I would share my story as it moves along. I'm spinning plates in the air but it's working, I haven't cut the ambilcial cord to the career yet but hope to in the next year or so.  I'd love to hear any of your thoughts if you want to share about making the transistion to full time real estate and give up that solid for sure income, commission only just makes me nervous.  Are any of you partimers?  How does it work for you? Do you feel the same about leaving a good paying job forever?  Just nervous....

I am a bigamist.  I have a house wife and a real estate  wife.  Just kidding.  In Jan 2014 was diagnosed with some very physically limiting illness. I have a friend who philsophy is when you are dumb You got to be tough.   Illness is COPD,  That is we formed our partnership.  We have our different strengths  I am pretty tech savy, but unable to do the physical stuff.  Our relationship is simple in office stuff is mine.  If it involves a car key it is all hers.  We have been friends for 30 years and both like and trust each other.  That is an essential and very rare combination.

Great story!  I love hearing things like this.  The more perserverance you can add, hard work, and that "well oiled machine", the  more successful you'll be.  Looks like you figured that out!
