American Cancer Society - Relay for Life Katy TX
On May 13 and May 14, 2016 the American Cancer Society is hosting its annual relay for life. This event takes place in numerous cities all across the US plus around the world and each has its own unique touches. Here is Katy TX it will be held at the Katy City Park in old or historic Katy TX. The event begins at 7 PM each night and ends the next morning at 7 AM. There many ways folks can participate by walking, donating, volunteering, supporting a team, etc.
Many folks may not have heard of this event do not know what is this Relay? Essentially it is an organized overnight community fundraising event. Various Teams of people camp out around a track and members take turns walking around the track. Food, games and seversal activities provide entertainment and fellowship. This is a family oriented event and the entire community is invited to participate in any way they can.
This is a team event and individual participants do not need to be there all the time.
There are few featured events including a Survivors Lap, Luminaria Ceremony and Fight Back Ceremony.
All Cancer survivors who attend will take the first Lap around the track as everyone celebrates their Victory over CANCER! Relay events also celebrate all the caregivers who support folks who are fighting for their lives.
The Luminaria Ceremony takes place after dark. The concept is for everyone who lost someone to cancer to honor those who fought cancer in the past and support all those brave people who are fighting for their lives right now. Candles are lit inside personalized bags and are placed all around the track.
The Fight Back Ceremony is is to inspire all participants to take further actions in the fight against this horrible disease. This fight needs to continue all year long.
The Relay for life started back in May 1985 by DR. Gordy Klatt who walked and ran 24 hours on a track in Tacoma Washington. He raised $27,000 for the American Cancer Society. The next year 340 plus supporters joined him in this event. Since inception this worldwide charity event has raised over $5 BIllion. In my mind this is a staggering figure of funds generated by any recurring fund raiser. .
Think about what you can do to support this fight against Cancer. My mother-in-law passed in 2009 after her courageous fight against cancer. We all still miss her every day..
