A copywriter never knows what the day will bring...

Most of the time I write copy to promote an agent. It might be their bio; it might be a web page for buyers or sellers; it might be a custom prospecting letter or perhaps a brochure.

This morning, something unusual came my way.

My good friend and client Loretta Maimone called to ask me to write a letter. But this letter had nothing to do with her and her business. It was in support of a friend who is seeking a review by the Clemency board for an early release from prison.

This gentleman, who was a State Attorney in Florida until his arrest, has been in prison for 5 years following a disasterous lapse in judgment. He attended a ball game, had a little too much to drink, and ended up killing someone when he made a wrong turn.

Because of his position, the state threw a "heavier book" at him than on others who have been in the same situation. He got a 10 1/2 year sentence.

Because of his high profile and his many years of  work with non-profits in the community, he believes he can bring the message of "Don't drink and drive" to a great number of people who just might listen to someone who will live the rest of his life regretting that he did. That will certainly do more good for the community than he can do sitting in prison for another 5 1/2 years.

I hope the letter I wrote will help his cause, and I admire Loretta for giving me the assignment.

And now... I wonder what tomorrow will bring?

Marte Cliff - What an interesting day.  You're right you never know what tomorrow will bring.  Your letter, which was definitely a change of subjects from the every day stuff, was a heart-breaker.  A lapse in judgment, a right turn instead of a left turn, you just never know.  A great reminder to make good decisions and to make the most out of today as you never know what tomorrow will bring!  Great post!

Yes Laura Allen, Lake Tahoe - Truckee Real Estate for Sale www.TahoeLauraLuxuryHomes.com, whether that man is in prison or out, he'll never be free of that memory. The punishment will go on for the rest of his life.

@Kat - I do too. I suppose it will be months before there's an outcome and I've asked Loretta to let me know.

Good morning Marte. Well I'll bet this was a surprise. I think if you write well you can write anything. Keep us posted.

Thanks Sheila Anderson - I don't know about "anything." I would not even attempt to write about the stock market (along with dozens of other subjects that are far beyond my comprehension.)

Hi Marte Cliff I can't believe that people still drink then drive, but I also think that sentences MUST be consistent. It sounds like there might have been some personal animus involved here. A good project for you.

It is not knowing what tomorrow holds that makes life interesting.

I agree Bill Roberts The punishment should be the same whether you're a truck driver, a prominent attorney, or even a highly-placed government official.

Marte- a tough task but if anyone could do it, it would be you.  Most people deserve a second chance and as you said, the memory of what he did, as well as what has happened since, will remain with him.

Kathy Streib In my opinion, no other punishment could be as severe as that memory. Really, I think our system of punishment could use an overhaul. Someone like him is not likely to re-offend, so keeping him in prison is a waste of his life as well as a burden to the taxpayers. The same goes for many of our "white collar" criminals - like Martha Stewart!

I agree with locking up rapists, (deliberate) murders, pedophiles, people who push drugs to kids, those who engage in human trafficking, etc. They are a danger to society.

Wow now that's an interesting twist for you to write up.  Do let us know how that turns out. Tough situation on all sides I'm sure. Seems like it would be a better use of his time and skills to get the message out the next 5 years rather than doing nothing in prison.

I think so too Anna Banana Kruchten.

That has to be a first. I hope if he does get out early he follows through on his commitment to educate others. You are right, that will do way more than sitting in prison.

Jane Peters Loretta thinks he will. The reason she knows him is that he was active in many of the same charitable/community service activities that she supports.

Not your every day type of business. On the other side of the coin, there could be many more people in jail under similar lapse in judgments with a lot less influential friends that could deserve a letter like that but it will never get done.  They will have to do the time for committing the crime and someone with some influence may get out sooner.

Ed Silva That's true. It takes a lot of effort and a lot of rallying friends to even be considered for early release, at least in Florida. Loretta said that his wife has been working on this for at least 2 years. The tough part is that only 20 people per year can go before the Clemency board - and there are 6,000 inmates who would like to be considered.
