Not All Lenders Are Alike

I have been in the mortgage business for over 15 years.  My favorite part of this business is the connections that I get to make with my awesome clients and realtor partners. Like you, I have heard HORROR stories of inefficiency, lack of communication and outright lies from folks in the business and consumers. Much of that has gone away over the years with licensing and regulations, but still, not all lenders are alike.

Some lenders will "take your order"-
"OH, you want a 10 year loan, here is your rate, would you like fries with that."

These types of lenders are not looking at your "big picture" to determine if this is truly right for you.

Some lenders will tell you what to do without realizing the impact, because they are either too new, uneducated or don't care.-
"Pay off all of these old collections and then we can talk."

Note: This will probably hurt your credit, not help it. Be careful here!

Some lenders are only in it for the money and don't really care about the long term impact-they are in a "turn and burn" business, not a relationship business!
"Refinance your low rate loan into an adjustable rate with NO money out of pocket!"

What they don't tell you is the risk involved in the adjustable rate and they don't tell you that they will be taking a chunk of your equity at closing in fees.   Though this might be a good answer for some, it is not the right answer for most. If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is!  Do your research!

Some lenders claim to have the LOWEST RATES IN TOWN-
The lowest rate does not always mean the best service, lengthy lead times, high stress and may include significant fees.

Some lenders will take care of you, educate you and guide you through the process.  That is the type of lender I strive to be!

We were about a year and a half into the house hunting process when we changed realtors and changed mortgage lenders. After a year and half of house hunting and mortgage workings and a failed house purchase with our other realtor and mortgage lender, you would expect that we would've had a lot of knowledge about the process. While we thought we had it, we actually learned that we didn't. We learned that there was information that had been kept from us. We quickly learned after a very short conversation with Bridget that our past experience really was not a good experience and that this new experience was going to be very different. The amount of knowledge that Bridget took the time to share and impart upon us was insurmountable. We felt completely cared for and immediately trusted her. She wore this pin "Mortgage Mama" at our settlement and it couldn't be more perfect for her. She became our Mortgage Mama - she cared for us in the way our mothers would and would want for us to be cared for. She guided us, taught us, and genuinely loved on us the way a mortgage mother should! I have and will sing her praises to anyone who will listen and can't recommend her enough! We LOVED working with Bridget! And when it comes time to sell our current home, we will be working with Bridget again!

...and THIS is what makes it all worthwhile!

Not all lenders are alike!

All lenders are not alike.... so true.  As a former lender turned realtor, I know this to be so more than most.  Thank you for a writing a clear and concise article so that the general public can begin to become educated on the process.

Bridge, you're so right, but luckily I know so many lenders who are terrific!  They know their products and listen to my clients.  They are knowledgable and do what they say they'll do.  Can't ask for more than that!  Hmmm.  Maybe I need to write a couple of posts about some of them!

Diane, So many appraisers or title folks or lenders become realtors and vice versa.  Sure gives you a great perspective-good for your clients!

Patricia, I am sure your go to lenders would appreciate that!
