Ask An Ambassador: How to Catch an Internet Thief with Digiprove

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with KD Realty - 408.972.1822 CA DRE#01366594

As an Independent San Jose real estate Broker I own and manage three sites on the Internet. The Internet is known by me to be the Land of Oz and Thieves.

I write and publish my own content, pages, posts, graphics, photos, video, etc., on my San Jose Homes for Sale and San Jose Probate Real Estate Agent site.

This post is inspired by Mimi Foster who recently wrote several posts about thieves stealing her content and using it as their own. These thieves literally copy and pasted Mimi's entire post, including the graphics, and published it as their own. The most recent thief created a video using all of Mimi's content on her post about the Seller 10 Commandments.

The question we must ask our self is:

Do I value my content?

My response is: Heck YES!

As I was discussing with Mimi the other day, it is not only the time it takes to write great content, the content contains our many years of experience and knowledge as well as our own unique creativity.

We write with our personality.  When some steals our content, it feels like identity theft and kidnapping of our personality. It is a violation on so many levels. Plagiarism is more than a dirty word.  Plagiarism is theft. Plagiarism is a violation of copyright laws.

We see a many violations in the ActiveRain community. That is not what this post is about. Violations in the AR community should be reported.

How to Prevent Thieves from Steeling Content on our WordPress Site

The way I have found is DigiproveThis post will simply highlight what I find to be the crown jewels of the software.  The graphic below is a screen shot of the settings page on my San Jose website.  The settings I've chosen is to prevent right clicking and copying content. As you can see on the image below, I've selected "log IP address" and "send me an email".

Testing the system, I right clicked on my home page and the message box appears. All of my attempts were registered and logged.  I covered my IP address in screen shot.  The right clicks are logged in the event log.

When anyone right clicks on a page or a post, a message box pops up with my custom message: "Right clicking is disabled; log files are maintained; we reserve the right to puruse content theft" as shown in the graphic below.

On every page and post appears a customizable message as shown in the graphic below.

Digiprove copyright protected notice

When "Copyright secured by Digiprove Copyright 2016 Kathleen Daniels" is clicked on it directs to Digiprove Content Certificate.

When "All Rights Reserved" is clicked on the message below appears.  This message changes based upon the license type we select to use.

For a small fee, we can protect up to 10 WordPress sites. Check out their pricing here. I feel the low cost of the Digiprove subscription is well worth helping to protect my content

Is the solution perfect?  I think we all know the answer to that. Nothing is perfect in the Land of Oz and the Internet.  The content could be printed and retyped. Even then, we have digital proof that we wrote, published and own the content. Digiprove removes the "easy to steel" element from Internet thieves.

I personally doubt the lazy thieves would do the work required to actually reproduce the content. If they had it in them, they would not be steeling our work in the first place.

I'm still paying around with the many ways to customize various features like changing the colors to match my sites.

If you value your content like Mimi Foster and I value our content then you might just want to check out Digiprove.  You can try it for free

A special thank you to Ciara and Cian at Digiprove for all of your help and great customer service!

Interesting. This looks like it is Wordpress specific. I like the concept and the prices are not that bad!

Gary L. Waters, Broker Owner, Waters Realty of Brevard, LLC - the one I posted about is WordPress specific because I have three WordPress sites.  They have solutions for the Enterprise as well - literally scanning servers to copyright protect documents, etc.  I don't need that ... just my content protected.

What about television theft? I had a Kansas City TV reporter a/ka/ "personality" steal my About.com content and use it verbatim on the air without credit. I notified management (and him), and they did nothing to remove the video; they don't care.

Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents - with content Digiproved with a certificate you could puruse them for the theft. I imagine they think a real estate agent would not go to those lengths.

Hi Kathleen Daniels This is better than a virus. I might have to use this to get back at those nasty thieves. In the past I didn't stress over it because it wasn't worth the effort. Now it is!!!

Absolutely true.  Digiprove makes is a lot harder to do it now. If they want to steal it they will actually have to do some work. Most thives won't put the time into it Richie Alan Naggar - at least that is my opinion. If they wanted to work they could be writing their own content.

What an excellent post and such useful information. While theft and plagiarism has been going on for years, this looks extremely affordable and a good option for us small businesses without an entire IT team. Thank you so much for sharing this information.

Your timing is amazing. I was on a FB page for real estate agents this morning. She created a new website a few months back and was complaining because she's not seeing any lead activity. She asked agents to go look at her site and advise. Lo and behold, she has duplicated my content. Steam was coming out of my head. I work so hard writing and creating hundreds of pages on my site and there she was showing it off to the masses like she created it. It was obvious where she tried to add her own content to mine. As you said, she had a completely different voice and it was obvious where she tried to add her own words. The real kicker...she is an AR agent. What a surprise? And this person brags about being an agent for 17 years. I guess she's never read the REALTOR® COE. I will be looking into ways to prevent this including researching Digiprove. Thanks again for this timely post.

Tammie White - I am not surprised the agent is an AR member. I've seen some doozies from members here in the Rain. Thankfully, the lion's share of members are GOOD people.

That agent is not only a thief ...she is STUPID posting what she did on FB as that is exactly how her theft became known to you.

Digiprove is right up their with RealBird IMHO ... great helpful software and a good bang for the marketing dollars we spend each year for it.  My business will always Digiprove moving forward.  Digiprove even has sample cease and desist letters for us to use.  That digital certificate is all the proof we need to prove copyright.

I am SO sorry this happened to you. I know how hard you've worked on your content and building your business. I suspect because the content is copied Google knows it and that is why the thief is not getting any leads.

May 13, 2016 05:36 AM
Tammie White, Broker

I suspect so. I'm so tired of agents who do this kind of thing. I may get ideas to add content to my site from other agents but I never copy their content. Ugh!!

Yes, Carla Muss-Jacobs, Principal Broker/Owner I remember.

This is for WordPress content ... not on ActiveRain.  I will continue to protect my content on my WP sites.  Most especially now that I am posting on them again.  I spend too much time researching and writing to sit back and let some jackhole copy it

Thanks for sharing this info.  I have not looked at Digiprove to deter copying.

I have used Copyscape for many years to scan and detect other websites that have copied my content.  I have sent copyright infringement notices to several copycats and had their web pages or website removed.  No lawyer needed.

Maybe we should let them copy the content, but insert a computer virus in it to lock up their computer.
