What is going on?

There's always a reason for another event on Hilton Head Island and May is still seasonable - not too many no-see-ums, and so it's time to have some mouth-watering (and sometimes tongue singeing) ribs and barbecue from restaurants and amateurs alike.

Where can you get tickets?

You can buy them in advance at The Coastal Discovery Museum, Burke's Pharmacy, Reilley's Grille at Sea Pines Circle, or User Friendly, on Hilton Head Island or Honey Baked Ham in Bluffton, and Bluffton Pharmacy. You can also get them from any Kiwanis member. This entitles you to 7 food coupons - and believe you me that will be plenty!!!

Where does the money go?

The Kiwanis, is very involved locally and internationally their mission is 'to serve the children of the world'! Proceeds this year go to The Children's Center, The Coastal Discovery Museum, Marine Corps Scholarship Fund, Deep Well, and the Boys Scouts and Girls Scouts.

Hints to enjoy the Rib Burnoff?

1.   Have antacids - no seriously, this is to be enjoyed and not all of the selections are that spicy. The various competitors all have choices as to whether you want to sample a firey hot rib or barbecue offering or one that is fairly mild and you can spice it up yourself.

There may or may not be a debate as to whether the dry rub or a wet rub is better or whether you put the sauce on during cooking or after cooking or not at all but I am NOT going to get into that negotiation.

2.   Come early and come hungry! For those of us who have come year after year, we know that the favorites (One Hot Mama's, Kenny B's, Burke's Pharmacy, and the Hilton Head Firefighters) run out of their yummy creations and we all kind of head there. For smokey goodness, the Smokehouse always has terrific ribs too. There are also every year more and more 'amateurs' with creative ways to flavor then smoke their meats and I'd be sure and head that way as well. There's also one person in the bunch that will try alligator but from experience, it's really kind of tough - don't tell them I said that!

3.  Bring cash - always easier and that way if you have a family member who really is not a fan of the barbecue or ribs, they can get hot dogs and ice cream or snow cones.

4.  Bring your ID - they will be selling beer and wine so be prepared.

5.  Bring a blanket or chairs to sit on. The Portajohns (not the restroom) will again be playing and there will also be an area with games for the kids - including face painting and fun activities from The Sandbox.!

Doesn't this sound like a great thing to do? Wouldn't you LOVE to live in a community that has these kinds of events?
