Whether you’re a real estate professional or in another line of work, you might want to think about Zen organizing as a way of removing clutter.
The concept is rather simple. Every time you take out a file or a note pad, you put it back in its place when you’re done. realtormag.com interviewed Regina Leeds, known as the “Zen organizer” and author of the book Right Size, Right Now. “We live in a cause-and-effect universe,” Leeds says. “If you see an effect you don’t like, it might be a behavior pattern. I teach people to think and approach their environment differently.”
Leeds says Zen organizing is about decluttering and opening up space to make it more comforting and easy to work in. She says a messy work environment “sabotages” people because they end up spending too much time looking for stuff.
The goal, Leeds says, is to have “tasteful ownership” over your workspace. And that’s important when you bring clients into your office. She offers these tips.
— Only have the items you will be immediately using closest to you on your desk and organize outward from there.
— Get rid of everything you don’t need or use. It might be old letterhead or brochures. Maybe business cards. Once you do this, set up a standardized filing system based on name, date, or categories.
— Your walls say a lot about you. So hang framed photos, even personal ones, awards, and artwork related to your profession and community. But keep it tasteful. You don’t want your office to look cluttered with wall hangings or display items.
— Decorate your office with plants. They bring warmth and light into an office space.
— Believe it or not, putting a small bowl of candy on your desk makes an office more inviting for clients. — Keep common areas around your desk tidy. For example, if there’s a nearby kitchen at your home or office, keep that area clutter free.
