City of Sumas, Open for Business!

It was featured as being "Open for Business" by Business Pulse Magazine, the City of Sumas is becoming the model for business-friendly communities in Whatcom County. It is a little city but the slogan would suggest as much. The Sumas city has accommodating land, cheap power, fast-trackg permitting, and zero impact fees - all with a customer based focus. Business and civic leaders gave Sumas as solid "A" just recently because of how the business aligned their city is.

Sumas is a little town in Whatcom County, Washington, with a population of 1,307 as per the 2010 census. It is located adjacent to the Canadian border and borders the city of Abbotsford, British Columbia. The Sumas-Huntingdon port of entry at the north end of State Route 9 operates 24 hours a day. Sumas shares Nooksack Valley School District with the towns of Nooksack and Everson. It is the northernmost settlement on Washington State Route 9, and experiences Astronomical Twilight for 22 days during the months of June and July.

Utility Rates:
The City of Sumas has its own utility. They buy power from the Bonneville Power Administration and then sell it to their consumers.

Residential Electric Rate - $5.00 base charge plus .063 cents per kilowatt hour.
Commercial Electric Rate - $4.50 min. per month plus up to 5000 kilowatts at .063 cents. Over 5000 is charged at .0685 cents per kilowatt hour.
Industrial Large Users - No minimum or base, charge is .0475 cents per kilowatt hour for the first 435,000 Kw. Past that is charged at .0440 cents per kw hour.
Demand Charge for Industrial is $4.35 per Kw plus a $234.50 base rate.
Residential Water - 600 c.f. for $9.90 per month. Beyond that, 1.08 cents per 100 c.f.
Residential Sewer - Base fee of $11.85 per month. Beyond that, $5.946 per 100 c.f. of water used
Residential Storm Sewer - Single Family Residence $1.50 per month. Multi Family $3.50 month.
Commercial Water - 600 c.f. for $9.90 per month. Beyond that, 1.08 cents per 100 c.f.
Commercial Sewer - Base fee of $11.85 per month. Beyond that, $5.946 per 100 c.f.of water used.
Commercial Storm Sewer - $3.50 per month.
Television - $36.95 per month for basic. Showtime $11.00 additional per month.
