Great Chicago Buildings: Museum of Science & Industry

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Exit Strategy Realty

Chicago is know for it's museums but the Museum of Science and Industry is the largest science museum in the Western Hemisphere.

It is the only remaining building from the World's Columbian Exposition 1893 and represents truly classic architecture and was constructed from material called "staff" which is a combination of plaster, cement, and jute fibers.

The Museum is home to many exhibits but the ones that I remember from my childhood are the coal mine, German Submarine, and train set.

I recall the full-scale ME109 and Spitfire suspended from the ceiling at the entrance. They were in dogfight pose, with the Spitfire diving on the German fighter. That was more -or-less 60 years ago. I have no idea if they are still there. I also toured the U505 immediately after it was installed and opened to the public. And, in some obscure corner of a lower floor, I could strap myself into a WWII anti-aircraft gun and pretend.... Well, the memorable exhibits were different for different children, but the unforgettable effect of the Museum was universal.

I remember the Science and Industry Museum was my favorite place to go when I visited Chicago.  As soon as you walked in the doors, there was a giant train set.  It's been decades since then, so I don't know if  it is still there.
