Stress has been said to be one of the main killers of people in our country. The World Health Organization has called stress to be the health epidemic of the 21st century.
Panic attacks, depression, high blood pressure, ulcers, fear, phobias, coronary heart disease and more are all derived from stress. Americans spend billions every single year on medications for stress relief (Prozac, Celexa, Xanax, etc).
So, is it really an enemy? No! Contrary to popular belief, stress is a survival tool that is necessary and is designed to protect us from harm. Stress is reactionary to the human body much like a smoke alarm is to a building.
I guess you could say it's a warning system for the human body. When there is a situation for which we are not prepared for adequately, the result is stress. When you cannot handle what's happening to you, you get "stressed out". Stress is letting us know that we need to be better prepared so that we can effectively cope with it. You need to learn how to harness it much like an actor/actress does when they get butterflies in their stomach.
Instead of trying to eliminate stress, we need to learn how to use stress effectively to become better equipped with situations and how to cope with them. I don't know how to tell you how to cope, I'm not you're psychologist or doctor. :-)
