Abe Lincoln worked as a young store sales clerk in New Salem, Illinois. This is before child labor laws. According to the legend, whenever he realized he had overcharged a customer by a few pennies, he would close the shop and deliver the correct change-regardless of how far he had to walk. Thus he acquired the nickname Honest Abe.
Time have changed. Honesty remains. Although it is to a small degree. I went to a rural postal service for mailing. The post master was talking about delivering live chickens took my certified mail. She mentioned she is not the one bringing kitty cat to work. That one moved on.
Next day, I got this weird government envelope with contents. Knowing me, I thought I left my credit card and they sent it back to me.
"The System over charged you. Your total should have been $6.01. Here is your refund".
My last refund from US Postal Service was way back when they raised the postage by one penny. I did not have that penny so I taped a penny on the envelope. It came back with a chop: "Insufficient postage, return to sender".
There is an honest Abe in America anywhere you go.
