Having a Bad Day?...Don't Use Social Media to Vent

Reblogger Winston Heverly

Debbie Laity, consistently has so many great posts and most importantly is terrific about sharing it to us Rainers and beyond. This article has new & exciting information for all the readers to take advantage from. I, myself will be anxious to learn from it! So many times I write blogs and really don't think that it gets the impact that it should. So I love to see re-blogs of popular posts. Thanks again for sharing.

Having a Bad Day?...Don't Use Social Media to Vent

OK...the transaction didn't close, or is delayed, and you've worked really hard. You feel like you've done all of the work yourself, and maybe tensions are running high on both the buying and selling side. Then a discussion of commission comes up, and the seller doesn't feel you're worth it. You just need to vent, and writing a blog post might be the perfect way to get some release.

DON'T DO IT!

Don't Use Social Media to Vent Because You've Had a Bad DayDo you want to be that agent that gets caught using social media to slam another agent, or discussing commissions? This could be a violation of the Code of Ethics. I don't want to be that agent. Read your Code of Ethics.

Personally I find it disheartening to hear agents talk about how unprofessional other agents behave. It only adds to the negative stigma that some people already have of our business. I don't talk commissions, either. That's no ones business.

NAR has an article on social media posts that can get you into trouble. This article has guidelines on what social media topics to avoid. Discussions of commissions and bad experiences with other agents are on this list.

Don't Use Social Media to Vent Because You've Had a Bad DayIf there's a question about whether or not I would share what I've written with the masses, then I won't share it. For me the answer to the question is...yes, no or maybe. If in doubt I won't publish the piece...even as a members only post here on Active Rain. This is one situation where I do make assumptions.

I assume that even if I'm posting to members only, the information is still out there for the rest of the world to see. All someone has to do is copy and paste your information into an email, and it's out there in cyber space to be seen by anyone that cares to find it.

Is what you are putting on the internet something you really want to share with the world? Sharing your frustrations online could turn your bad day into something worse like a ethics complaint. If you need to vent after a bad day, don't share it online...get a punching bag.

I've lived on Colorado's Western Slope for over 26 years. I love this area and all it has to offer, and I enjoy sharing what I know about my home. As a REALTOR®, I also love to share my expertise in this area as well. If you need any real estate information for Montrose County, or Delta County, Colorado...please give me a call.

LOTS of ways Social Media can get lots of people into trouble who believe that they have a right to say anything, anywhere, any time...oh not.

Good reblog, Winston.   I've told more than one person that social media is not the place to air their dirty laundry.

People don't always think it through. Even if it's "members only" there can be local agents that are actually members here and you are not aware because they are not active. You never know who is reading!

Good choice or a re-blog Winston Heverly - I tend to stay away for social media these days ... too many things that I find upsetting.  Lots of venting taking place and of course the political climate seems to be the focus of a lot of it.

Hi Winston.  Airing our dirty laundry in public is just plain dumb.  Excellent blog by Debbie.
