Completed Staff Work

Team members often rely too much on their team leader to help them get stuff done.

When they come to a problem, rather than simply solving it themselves, they turn to their team leader for help.

This should not be happening.

It is not the team leader’s responsibility to solve all, of each team member’s problems. The Team Leader should only be involved when it is complete, or the problem too complex for the Team Members to solve on their own.

The team member should use every resource they have to figure out how to solve the problem. They can Google the answer. Everyone knows how to use Google, so they should be able to figure out a solution by themselves, right?

Team Members need to try every possible solution to before they go to their team leader, for help!

  1. At the time the project is assigned to you, ask the team leader:
    1. Who
    2. What
    3. When
    4. Where
    5. Why
  2. Seek out every possible method of solving the problem BEFORE re-approaching the team leader.
  3. Google it!
  4. Find solutions. As more problems come up, find solutions to those as well.
  5. Ask yourself, “is there ANY WAY I could solve this myself, without input from the team leader?” If the answer is yes, then do it!
  6. When tempted to ask your team leader questions, ask yourself: “Is it possible to wait until the next team huddle/meeting to ask this question?” There are virtually no emergencies in real estate. (if it’s an emergency, call 911!)
  7. The team leader needs ANSWERS, not questions.
  8. Your team leader understands that it may take you far longer to come up with answers yourself that she could have given you quickly and easily. That’s okay! RESIST the urge to lean on her for answers! She is swamped. Pretend she is on vacation and FIGURE. IT. OUT.
  9. Ask other team members (Not the Team Leader) for input and/or suggestions.
  10. If the team leader has to give you all the answers:
    1. They don’t need you
    2. You aren’t learning
    3. The team is inefficient
    4. Success will suffer!
  11. Remember, if everyone on the team asks the team leader 3 questions a day, they could have solved some other way, the team leader would be wasting tons of time that could/should of been spent on more important activities like:
    1. Lead Generation
    2. Lead Follow Up
    3. Lead Conversion
  12. Ask your Coach!
  13. The final test to determine if you have finished “completed staff work” is:
  • “Would (insert team leader name) be willing to sign their name to this and stake their professional reputation on it and its accuracy?”
  • If the answer is “no” or “I’m not sure” go back and work on it until you are confident the answer will be “YES”
  • Present team leader with options and your top suggested solution.
  • Don’t go into long explanations unless the team leader requests more information. Keep answers short, accurate, and relevant.

Even if you fix the problem, and then come across another road block, you should be able to work your way around it.

The team leader has better things to do then fix all of your problems. If you absolutely can’t figure it out yourself and need to ask your team leader, ask yourself if it can wait until then next team meeting or team huddle. If so, ask it then. Your team leader needs answers not questions.

Your team leader doesn’t want someone on their team who constantly needs to be helped. It is ineffective for their business. They don’t need you if you are doing more asking than solving.

One way to prevent this is to pretend they are on a long vacation and they are not available. If you can’t figure it out, ask other team members.

Also you have the ability to ask you Club Wealth Coach if your team leader is a member.

Remember, the project is only completed if, and when your team leader would put their name on it and submit it as if their reputation was on the line.

Also, if you present a problem to your team leader, give them the three best options that will help solve the issue.

Make sure you limit it to the best 3 options and then give your input on what you think the best option would be.

Be the solution not the problem
