Throwback Thursday - 5/26

Thursday, May 26, 2016 - Today is Thursday, isn't it? My time flies quickly!

This pair of Texaco Fire Chief Gasoline Gas Pumps got me all pumped up, doing a flashback dance in my head. I was sitting in the back seat of my daddy's 1956 Packard, the one with the rope behind the front seats, looking out the car window at those Fireman hats, thinking about how shiny red they were but the smell of gas made me hold my nose. I was very young at the time and as the years went by, my dad talked a lot about that Maltese Gray Packard he owned. He liked it, but boy was he mad because the car gave him nothing but trouble.

My dad was the only driver in the family and he hauled my grandma, aunts and uncles around town too because they didn't own an automobile. He was really proud of that car. I thought the color of his eyes matched the color of the car just perfectly! His eyes were gray, a lighter shade of gray - I never did see another human being with color eyes like his. Everyone else in the entire family, both sides, had blue eyes, except my dad.

Because he was the only driver, my dad enjoyed taking us out for a Sunday drive. We drove miles and miles just to look and see things we normally wouldn't see in our neighborhood. Those road trips gave me reason to dream big dreams and think about all the places I'd like to go. I loved Saturday afternoons too because that was the day my daddy washed and polished his car by hand. He wouldn't dream of taking us out for a Sunday drive if the car wasn't spanking clean and shiny too! Ah! those were the days!!!

Jeff Dowler CRS - I can't imagine what gas cost back then either. But aren't those gas pumps a whole lot more exciting to look at than todays pumps?

Great memory and TBT. Love the story and your dad represents a bygone era. Some of those good ole days deserve to come back into fashion.  Now where is the soda pop in an ice barrel? :) :)

Brian England - Vintage things are cool because they represent the past. People really did live through those times and many things were different. It's nice to look back at old photographs too. Aren't you glad we have digital photos today? Sometimes, it's hard to look at old faded memories.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD - That bygone era was very real and people like my dad did exist. Anyone who can still communicate with their parents are very lucky. When I see the things that represented my father's in the prime time in his life, it makes me thankful I was given parents and memories.

My Dad had gray eyes too and on Sundays he would take us in the car to a park so we could see a tree.  We lived in the Bronx :)

Patricia I remember those Texaco pumps well.  These days I can not even remember when was the last time I saw a Texaco Gas Station.

Liz Wallace - I loved that story about your dad with gray eyes taking you to the park on Sunday to see the trees! My dad also took us to the Forest Preserves a lot to run around and we played baseball with him too!

We must have had similar backgrounds! I think that's so cool!!!

I remember seeing Texico signs when I was a kid!  We also had Richfield stations back then.  Mobil gasoline was popular, left the scene for awhile, but recently returned to my neighborhood.
