A Matter of Interpretation: Three Wise Monkeys Teach in Malibu!

In Western culture, these three monkeys representing "Speak No Evil, See No Evil, Hear No Evil" is associated with "looking the other way, or feigning ignorance".

In  Eastern Culture, it means: know that Evil is there, just don't spend time focused on it.  When one focuses on the negative, it gives it strength and influence.  The same thing happens when you focus on the positive.  In our research we discovered that Mahatma Gandhi had a small statue of these 3 monkeys in his living quarters.

What is Your Interpretation?

Happy Thursday!

A. I had no idea that it represented looking the other way. Without knowing it I've always had the Eastern culture influence in my life. Thanks Ron and Alexandra Seigel

Welll I come from Sedona - Of course I subscribe to your interpretation. I also believe in Karma and that the Universe has a Master Plan for us. We have free will but everything happens for a reason and I choose to find the positive in what might appaer to be a negative situation. ...Oh! and what Bob "RealMan" Timm said! Thanks for posting this Ron and Alexandra Seigel .

Good morning, Alexandra and Ron --- I had never heard the Eastern interpretation but I like that approach.

I think I was very young when I was introduced to the Three Monkeys. They provide life lessons! As children, my sisters and I were reminded, time and time again, "Hear no evil, See no evil, Speak no evil." We were also taught, if one jumps over the bridge, will you jump over the bridge? Evil was prevalent in the Cold War - staying away from gossip, never speaking bad of others, and using our eyes for seeing the good was the Christian thing to do.

I like the Eastern interpretation because you have to know what evil is to stay away from it.

Actually, I think that both interpretations are the same - I'm not sure about the feigning of ignorance, I think that the western interpretation also means to keep the focus on the positive!

Hi Ron & Alexandra - The Eastern approach is a wise one and will lead to inner peace - I like it better.

The Eastern interpretation is new to me but I like it. I think this is the type of thing that means different things to different people.

Alexandra, I like the Eastern culture intrpretation of the 3 moneys. Knowing eveil exists and not dwelling on it is the key as you said in your post.

Ron and Alexandra, of course there's evil, if we think it doesn't exist, we would be fooling ourselves. It's very easy to look the other way though.

Joanna Cohlan the Western view is apparent given the amount of explicit violence that is shown as entertainment on the large screen and the small screen.  Even the news shows it in high definition.  There is a lot of focus on it.  If no one was buying, it would go away and not be a prominent aspect of our lives. The Western interpretation is my understanding although the Eastern counterpart probably has many more followers Worldwide. How did it make a 180 degree turn in its translation?

I actually look at this as some form of wisdom. Larry has a statue of this in his office. And, as you know, positivity REIGNS in my outlook.

On a completely different monkey note, did you hear that the band The Monkees from eons ago have put out a new album?? Seriously!!
