Relationships and Scripts.

I had a discussion with my partner / Realtor / wife this morning and thought it might a good blog post.

She has become quite versed at using scripts when talking to people and making calls.

I, on the other hand, am under the impression that given the amount of personal development training I have had over my career scripts, to me, appear salesy and less personal.

I agree that you must have a way to "connect" with others or a good format yet most important you have to be filled with a feeling of who that person is and how you may help then even if there might be no commission to be earned.

Given we have only a few seconds to make a good first impression most occasions, the most important thing you can do is find out what is most important to the person you are hoping to "connect" with and see if they even want your help!

Yes, most really good scripts help lead you to that conversation yet, if followed too closely, can give the impression that you are only out for the result the script was designed to create for you.

So my advice is to read a few really good scripts, then put them back in the drawer. Crank up some really snappy music to get you in the groove, the go out and connect with people with the intention of finding out who they really are.

People really and truly do not care how smart you are as much as they want to know how much you care about them.

Build relationships unconditionally and the opportunities will soon follow, it's the law of the universe.......... (or something like that!)  :^}

Two sides to this convo:

"Winging it" versus using structure (Scripts), I would say that in my personal experience as a "professional" winging it kinda sales person, that I do much better when I develop a personal script that becomes second nature for me, a simple overview of who I am & what I do, and how I might be able to help you...

Steve, I am similar to you, kind of hate scripts but see their value as a framework to cover what needs to be covered but you have to be natural sounding and not a robot talking to people.

It's all about "know, like and trust" and how to achieve that in the shortest amount of time with the highest level of integrity!

   When I get a sales call from someone using a script, I can tell right away.  Artificial, stilted, non-engaging.

Even a script can have merit as long as you put personality into it. The problem with scripts is some folks use them in place of their personality..... :^}

Hi Steve, Good subject with lots of ideas.  Personally, I've discovered that over time I write my own scripts. The are personal, adjustable and proven.  The reflect my personality and are thus authentic.

Pre-canned scripts can be adapted, but often sound like a slick salesperson rather than someone with another persons best interest at heart.

Exactly Dan! Scripts do have their place in good sales / marketing but they must be used with adult supervision! :^}
