Pigs - Speechless Sunday

Pigs Huddled Up This week, I have been learning about pigs.   These three little piggies are from Kansas.  They now live at my ranch.   This was Day #1 one at home.   They were shy at first.

Colorado Junior Swine Association Ring of Success ShowThese little piggies are Colorado show pigs.   They are not little.  They are buff and muscular.

This snapshot taken yesterday on the first day the Colorado Junior Swine Association's Ring of Success Show.  The show was held this weekend at the El Paso County Fair Grounds in Calhan, CO.

These kids had the opportunity to show their hogs in three shows over the weekend (May 28-29).  The shows were also designed to help prepare the kids to show their hogs in the upcoming county and state fair season shows. The grand champion hog for each of the Ring of Sucess shows this weekend won $1,000.

I was very impressed by the dedication and showmanship that each of these kids displayed.    Notice, pigs are not shown in halters.  The kids have to coax them along carrying only a stick and a grooming brush.

The most unusual thing that I noticed at the show was what I didn't see.  I didn't see any kids glued to their cell phones or even walking around with their phones.  The only time I noticed cell phones was if they were being used to video someone showing or being used to take a picture.

If you know anyone wanting to buy or sell a horse property or rural property in the area between Denver and Colorado Springs, please feel free to contact me.

Growing up with pigs was amazing to watch them grow and I was fascinated to watch the piglets born and the mothers protection. Even though I was not involved with showing pigs, I have had some experience with them.  Good luck with your 3.  You are in for an adventure.

Hi Sondra, Do you plan to raise pigs or keep them as pets? The only pigs around here are on pig farms.

Sondra, I can just see the guys who gave us the film, "Best in Show", doing a remake but with pigs instead of dogs as the stars!  Pigs are great creatures.  I've heard they smarter than Labradoodles.

Sondra-How wonderful that you now have added 3 little pigs to your ranch. We had pigs when I was growing up. We even named our first two. Rusty and Dusty. They were more like pets. They are clean animals. They loved fresh hay and wouldn't go to the bathroom where they slept. They used to make tunnels in the fresh hay and we used to sit in their bed with them. We also rode them. Enjoy your new additions.

Cute post and pigs, and I too love the lack of electronic distraction you observed - there's a lesson here, Sondra.

Hi Sondra - I spent a fair amout of time in the company of pigs - real ones, too. They're playful and very smart and I really enjoyed them. Your three are going to be lots of fun, until they're bacon.

Hi, Sondra...what are you going to do with the pigs? Curious minds would like to know.

I like that the kids at the swine event are taking it seriously. It bums me out to see how kids today are glued to their phones.

How about those super tini pigs that are kept as inhome pets and recently all over internet?

Sondra~this is such a homage to country living! Makes kids grow up in a completely different way.

I could have sworn that I had videos posted of the little pigs and new filly at my girlfriend's farm, but somehow I never got it out of draft. Had to bookmark this!

Hi everyone,

Thank you for your comments.  Sorry for the delay in responding.

Gayle Rich-Boxman Fishhawk Lake Realtor (503)755-2905  There is still hope for your videos that are still pending in draft.

Inna Ivchenko I've seen a couple of those tiny pigs recently.   Little pigs, to include the tiny ones, are so darn cute.  The little ones can be held since they are so little but I'm not sure that they like being a lap pet.    I'm still trying to get the outside kind figured out.

Debbie Laity and Debbie Reynolds My goal is to have a diversified farm of animals that are  raised naturally for either breeding stock or amazing tasting food rather than the large "factory" raised types.    These pigs are experimental ones before I invest in the more expensive breeds.    My horses think I'm strange but the pigs/hogs can be so darned cute when you look at them and watch them as individuals.

Dick Greenberg I already sold those three until I could come up with a better housing system.   However, I bought two more smaller pigs  at the auction in Centenial last week.  They are working out better.     (My two days off of real estate work  are now attend "auction days."    I'm hoping that we could maybe get together for lunch some Wednsday when the goats are selling.  I need to stay away from the goats right now.  Lol.

Sharon Lee That's pretty cool that you had pigs also.   The bigs ones are certainly large enough to ride although I've got plenty of horses so I probably won't be riding pigs myself.    I agree they are clean animals although they do love getting to play in mud and water.   I hope you have a great day.

Rose Mary Justice Adventure with pigs. Lol. Well said.  They have been an adventure so far.

Dale Poll , Gary Woltal , Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD , Ron and Alexandra Seigel - thank you for your comments.  I'm still amazed that the kids and most parents were not on cell phones.   It was kind of nice to see people living in moment with people that were present.  I hope you have a great day.

Sondra, some pigs.  What fun shots!  The kids showing their pigs are not unlike the folks at the Westminster Dog Show, although somehow I'm guessing the dogs are easier to keep in line.
