Community Action Commission of Santa Barbara County, a private nonprofit is able to help.   For Santa Maria residents, CAC’s Home Energy Upgrade Program helps make the homes of income eligible families safe and warm by installing no-cost energy saving measures. 

 

All of these services are free to income eligible home owners and renters.   Saving up to $400 a year is possible with the installation of these measures and by following helpful energy saving tips

They offer those services to renters?  I don't understand that - renters don't own the buildings.

Jennifer - good point. Renters don't own the house so any major changes need to be approved by the owner like a new appliance or updates. I'll check and verify the renter criteria. I'm curios too. :)

Jennifer, I had an opportunity to call CAC for clarification today and verified this applies to tenants also.  They just need to pick up an application at the Santa Maria office or call the hot-line number at 805.617.2897 and an application can be mailed.  If the tenant qualifies, there is a form to send to the landlord for notification and permission.  (I think a landlord would be favorable)    This is a great program not available in all CA counties and a nonprofit funded by government grants and a long-term program.  There is income qualifications but the standard is not strict and I found the Santa Maria office very friendly and knowledgeable.   The answer is always not unless you ask, so I encourage all to check this out.  CAC  replaces all necessary items including new appliances, water heaters, etc. if needed.
