Tango is well on his way to being ready for the 2016 Show Season! He's worked h
ard all winter and early spring and will be heading to the Chattanooga Charity Horse Show in just a few short weeks.
Over the last couple of weeks we've been working on "rating" his speed. In other words, I've been trying to get him to SLOW DOWN. The photos in this post were taken about a week ago and right after they were snapped, our ride devolved into a bit of a fight.
We fought over his refusal to WALK. Yes, sometimes Tango needs to walk calmly for more than 2 steps. And he really hates the idea.
I'll be honest and say that this issue is squarely on my shoulders. It's all my fault!
I've let him get away with pushing me around and allowed him to do it his way for far too long. And now, I have to undo what I did. Never an easy task when it comes to a horse like Tango.
He's very smart and extremely strong willed. Fortunately for me, he is also very sweet natured. So, while he does like to get his own way and will put up a bit of a struggle, he doesn't blow up in a dangerous HORSEY kind of way.
Our walk "lesson" involved about 6-7 minutes of trying every trick in the book to do anything but walk followed by about 13 minutes of an ANGRY capitulation. By the time those 20 minutes were up, Tango was breathing hard and sweating profusely...out of frustration.
I don't think I have ever seen him so MAD! It was interesting to see. He realized that day that there was a new sheriff in town.
Mommy, the treating love machine had turned into THE BOSS!
Horse lessons translate to life.
You are smarter than a horse.
No matter how big the opponent is, perseverance pays off.
Sometimes, you can undo what you did.
Love is more than just gifts.
