Another real estate role – entomology

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with eXp Commercial, Referral Divison RRE-BRO-LIC-75443

Real estate professionals have many roles, including appointment scheduler, contract guide, process explainer, house preparer, open house director, map reader, data analyst, negotiation guru, and on and on. I can now add a new function, that of an entomologist! An entomologist is one who studies bugs, and yesterday, I had to demonstrate my skill (or lack thereof).

I was showing a multi-family house, and my client opened the door to an outside storage area. And with my first glance inside, I said, "EWWWW," followed by, "GASP, Oh my, look at those spiders!" There were large black spiders ALL OVER that room - on the ceilings, the walls, the floors. I had a major heeby-jeeby moment; this was the stuff of nightmares.

My client agreed and we started slowly backing away and swinging the door shut with fingertips, until we looked a little closer. Phew! We found they were not spiders at all, but tons of crickets. I think you can see from these pictures, that they can look very similar at first glance.

Spider       Cricket

So I failed at my first major entomology project, but you can bet the next time, I'll know the difference. But I can also say, I'm staying out of any room that has more than one bug. I have my limits.

Kat,  I just have to say that reading this made me smile.   I have not heard the term heeby-jeeby in a long time.  My mom used to say it frequently. I don't mind spiders and bug.  I am not a fan of the webs.

Will - Good! I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Gary - Adios is right. I remember that song!

Alexandra - Here too. We do hear the crickets often.

Grant - He was standing right there and saw it first hand!

Pat - Bugs can definitely scare off people although this time they didn't . Termites would have been another matter though!

Gita - Mice can be more startling - they scoot around so fast!

Kathleen - Especially the webs you don't see and walk into. Ick. My mother used to say heeby-jeeby too!

Conrad - I see what you did with those words! Thanks!

Diana - Me either.

Endre - Nah, they were not dangerous. I didn't know spiders meant no moisture - that's interesting.

yeah, I don't want to be in a room full of crickets either.  I like a bucket at a time for fishing.

I can see where you would make that mistake. When you first mentioned black spiders, I was thinking right away of black widows. We have them in my area, and I just killed a big female outside of my house. Why so many crickets in one place?

Oh Kat Palmiotti I don't do creepy crawly things.  A fellow stager once wandered down to a basement full of snakes. They were all in cages but had it been me, you would have been able to hear my scream around the world.

My husband is afraid as a little girl of spiders and I am the one called in to tackle them. I know I am bigger and faster and they can't win the battle.

Nicole - I stepped away slowly...  Yuck.

Debbie - I'm not sure why there were so many. Growing up, I remember we had a lot in my basement and I'm not sure they were there either.

Kathy - Oh that just reminded me of one house I saw a few years ago that had snakes in the cage in the attic. Ick.

Rene - I'm glad my client was in the front.

Larry - I bet you do a great job!

Debbie - Haha, you rock!
