Bennie the Turtle

How Did He Do It?

This guy's name is Bennie ... bestowed that name by our 4-year-old grandson, Henry.  (Our family's budding storyteller and future New York Times' Bestselling author, I'm sure ...)

Bennie somehow made his way up 5 steps and onto our neighbor's deck the other night.  They noted his presence there after hearing him tap at their patio doors.

I guess Bennie wanted their attention.  Or help.

My question is this:  How does a turtle tackle and make it up all those steps?  Especially a turtle of this size?  Bennie was no small dude.

Let me tell you, Bennie's definitely one determined guy.  It had to be a real challenge for him.  Maybe we all could learn from his efforts?

My neighbor and I wanted to help Bennie get back home, so we loaded him up in a galvanized tub and delivered him to our backyard, which backs up to the local golf course.

No small fete, as Bennie was a good "snapper" and had some good sized claws on him too.  He also was fairly heavy.  Obviously a hearty eater.

Last seen, Bennie was scurrying across the 8th tee box of the course.  Well, turtle scurrying anyway.  We figure Bennie's home is the pond located on the next golf hole ...

     Good luck, Bennie!

Hi Gene - I love it when these guys show up at the house. They really do get around well - those legs are a lot longer than they look. We usually give them some lettuce, which they really seem to appreciate, but best of all, they also scare the crap out of our dogs.

He certainly moved much faster than I would have suspected, Dick ... Just ask my neighbor how quickly his head popped out of that shell and almost nipped his ankle!  I totally understand why your dogs would think twice about messing with them ...

That's a great story! I haven't seen a turtle in the wild in many years.

He IS a good role model - never give up!

I am so proud of his creativity, Patricia .. And his ability to spin a good story at the drop of a hat.  His daddy is a published author.  He will be too ... I am sure of that ..

Thank you for your kind words .. And patience listening to his Grampa brag a bit ...

Gene- This reminds me of a feel good story we saw the other day.  We pulled up to a major intersection here and there was what may have been Bennie's cousin.  We were going to pull over but saw that a young man had just pulled up; got out of his truck and ran to get the turtle and drive him to his new home. Love your story of Bennie.

I missed that story, Kathy Streib ... so thanks for sharing it here!  I see it as good news too.  There are many people willing to go that "extra mile" for the Bennies of this world ...

I have seen a turtle climb steps.  He used his back legs and his tail to push up and then his front legs to pull on the next step.  And the poor thing, he got up and then I picked him up and took him back down and around the office to the creek.  He got on my office porch several years ago.

Well there ... you explained it for me perfectly, Tammy Lankford, Certainly a whole lot of work for this guy, as those steps were fairly steep.  Real stick-to-it-ness!

Tammy Lankford,

my office porch has just two steps.  he was making the climb as I pulled into the parking lot.  I turned off my car and just sat and watched him.  I also went in and got paper towels to move him.  I am just a little afraid of critters.

Good morning Gene. Nice job helping Bennie get back to ground level, it would have been more of a challenge without any help.

I suppose if he found his way up .. he'd have found his way down, Joe Petrowsky.  But he had us convinced that he wanted help when he tapped on our neighbors' door.  Glad we were there to assist!

Henry is one smart little guy!  Those big turtles can be kind of beligerant if they want food. My aunt's assisted living home had several living in the courtyard and they knew exactly where and how to get food.  It was fun watching them and the elders liked it  too as they could move faster than the turtles.

Chuckling about the faster comment, Anna Banana Kruchten ... and so agree with you about my little Henry!  He continually amazes his Grampa Gene ... the story he weaved about Benny was great ...

Those guys can be hefty. They are fast too for their size. I've seen them cross a football field at a fairly good clip & the dogs always find them.

I think they look for places to lay their eggs in either early June or July & they just head out scouting for appealing looking dirt.

I've helped a few 'cross the road' fast over the last few years in Schaumburg.

Never thought of the egg laying being a possibility, Lyn Sims  .. but it makes sense.  And you're absolutely right.  This Benny could scoot pretty fast!  He disappeared over the tee box and green pretty darn quick ...
