San Antonio is well know for our illustrious history, the Alamo and our Missions, as the gateway to the
Texas Hill country, the Tower of the America's, our Riverwalk and so much more. But without the San
Antonio River there would be no Riverwalk and I do plan to write more about our lovely Riverwalk at a
later time. The lovely San Antonio River is about 240 miles long and crosses through five Texas counties
-Bexar, Goliad, Karnes, Refugio, and Wilson. The River's headwaters begin about 4 miles north
of downtown San Antonio at Broadway and Hildebrand (at the Incarnate Word University
campus grounds). The river eventually runs into the Guadalupe River which then flows into the Gulf
of Mexico. Originally the San Antonio River was named in 1691 by the first Spanish Governor Diego Rios.
There are 6 missions along it's banks including the Alamo, our 4 San Antonio World Heritage Mission Sites
plus one other Mission in Goliad County. Even with our many recent torrential downpours the San
Antonio River is enjoyed, loved and appreciated because in Texas water is a rare and very much cherished comodity.
