Have You Got Trash?

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Gold DRE #00697006

Most of my clients take care of trash and junk removal before I ever meet up with them. Like, a few weeks ago I listed a home in Sacramento in which the previous seller had died in the living room. Her friend, a successor trustee drove up from southern California, called her daughter from Nevada, and then posted an ad on CraigsList. By the time I got over there with the paperwork, trucks were already half-full with dressers, tables, a sofa, etc.

It is also easy to rent a dumpster for a day or two and throw away stuff yourself. But that was not an option at my sister's house in Minneapolis. You can read more about that exciting adventure and see my niece clutching a never-used crockpot at this link: Junk Removal is a Rising Business in Real Estate.

Having helped a friend clean out his sister's home; whom was a hoarder hope to never have to do it again!

Make yourself an astonishing day.

I have a listing right now that is full of trash and vacant Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents but the owner is over seas and no one knows what he wants to keep. It makes showings difficult.

I love throwing things out.  And I have become quite familiar with our own local junk company.

Oh boy, my favorite thing to do. Although I have slid for a while I am back to trashing. I have to hide things from my hubby that I am dumping. He likes to save things.

When we went to Florida as my mom was dying I realized that she had already gotten rid of everything. I had minimal work to do after she died and it was such a relief. Really all I had to do was go through some personal papers, take her jewelry and a few pieces of "art" with me, give away her clothes and I was done.

Letting go of "stuff" is incredibly difficult, if not impossible, for too many people. We did a huge down-size about 5 years ago; it's time to purge again.

Hi Elizabeth -- getting rid of "stuff" can be very difficult for some --- I find it quite freeing.   While, I do have a crock pot I have never clutched it as closely as your niece.   No judgment -- just sayin'.

Good morning Elizabeth. The junk removal business is thriving in our area. One of my referral partners is in that business and is a great source of new business.

Michael Jacobs I know, right? I laughed and laughed, and she just clutched that darn hunk of worthless metal more tightly. Some things are not worth arguing over . . .

I'm a great believer in yard sales. Second, bring stuff to second hand places, those that benefit animals, for example. Third, back up a truck and haul it to the dump. You probably know by now that I travel light! Unfortunately, "my guy" is exactly the opposite. So we have a retreat up north in California where he can have all the stuff he wants. And he is totally happy to stay there while I travel. Makes for a great long term relationship.

Not long ago, I had a neighbor who became disabled like your sister.  Her son came to town and arranged for a "salvage" guy to clear out her home.  That's after he had removed valuable family heirlooms, however.  He lived in a San Francisco loft, and couldn't accommodate many of his mother's things.

You're right, there is a niche for that kind of service in real estate.
