Losing Focus

It's been raining here.  It's been raining for a long time.  It's been raining a REALLY long time.  In the Houston/Sugar Land/Richmond Rosenberg area, we had the tax day flood (April 18th).  And since, it seems like every day there has been rain.  Sometimes a little rain and a lot of thunder.  Sometimes a LOT of rain.  Last week the Brazos river crested 7 feet higher than it's all time record thanks to 15+ inches of rain upstream.  Places that had not flooded in 50 years, well, flooded.  Our subdivision was safe, thanks to a nicely maintained levee system ( I will never complain about Municipal Utility taxes ever again), but the water lapped at the areas around us.  There was one way in, and one way out of our neighborhood.  The river actually rose and flooded a state highway,  which was also the stage of an impromtu cattle drive.  Our county sheriff's department actually stopped traffic as 1000 head of cattle were herded to the other side of the highway.  We were fortunate.  There was no damage to our home, or our neighbors homes.  We had food, water and (thanks God) electricity.  Some of our surrounding neighbors were not so fortunate.

There is nothing like a natural disaster to make a person lose focus on their business.  Outside forces demanded attention.  A flooded storage facility that held 10 years of real estate records, now floating with the crawfish and snakes (yes, snakes) had to be cleaned out today.  Previous clients were evacuated from their homes.  I talked to two of them today who are back in with no damage.

There have been a lot of distractions.  But I am ready for the coming week.  It needs to be back to business as usual.  We survived and we will sop up the water, repair the damage and live to fight another day.  But, please, whoever is praying for rain can stop now.

Jeanne, we survived a few major snow storms here that put electricity out for more than a week and caused all sorts of damage. Massive pine trees fell on my house, we abandoned ship after that. The good news was the trees were so close to the house they hit the peak of the roof and slid off. A few stray branches did manage to stick through the roof. The house was cradled by fallen trees, front and back. I was lucky in that my office had electricity, and I could get there!!! I know how you feel, and it is NOT me praying for rain. You are in my thoughts.

I can relate Jeanne Gregory , in 2011 we had 5-1/2 feet of river run through our house for a month. It destroyed about 1/4 of the housing in Minot ND.

The flooding in Texas has made national news, Jeanne!  My thoughts are with those of you affected.  Even Paris has been flooding.  It is said they received 15" more rain than normal.  They were scrambling to save works of art at the Louvre.

Wow that is crazy.  Snakes?  That was just icing on the cake with everything else you are dealing with.

Snakes, and the whole place smelled like dead fish.  Lovely way to spend a Sunday.

Good Morning Jeanne - a natural disaster can uproot everything.  I remember how it uprooted us in the fall of 2012 with Hurricane Sandy.

That's  a lot of rain!  I hope your weather is cooperating now and that you continue to not endure damage and bad weather.

That sounds horrible. It appears you have a very good attitude about it though. Hope conditions have improved since writing this post.

Sharon Tara it's that old saying of life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it.

I really hope I clarified myself there and didn't come off wrong from what I wanted or the way in which I wanted.
